Cowboys Top South Florida To Remain Unbeaten

TAMPA, Fla. — Oklahoma State ran its winning streak to five with a 7-2 victory over South Florida Thursday at Red McEwen Field.
With the win, No. 21 OSU improved to 5-0, marking the first time since 2002 that the Cowboys have opened the season with five-straight wins.
Jordy Mercer led OSU's offensive attack with a 3-for-5, three-RBI night in which he finished just a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Matt Hague and Luis Flores each had two hits apiece for the Cowboys, and Flores also finished with two RBIs.
Andrew Oliver improved to 2-0 on the mound this season as the sophomore tied a career high with a six-inning effort. The southpaw did not allow a run while surrendering just three hits and racking up six strikeouts.
OSU got on the scoreboard first as Mercer led off the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run to left field, his first round tripper of the season.
The Cowboys rallied for two more runs in the fourth. Hague followed Mercer with a double, and after USF pitcher Daniel Thomas recorded a pair of outs, a hit-by-pitch and walk loaded the bases for Flores. And the OSU catcher delivered, collecting his second hit of the night on a double to right-centerfield that brought home two runs and gave the Pokes a 3-0 advantage.
OSU added to its lead in the fifth, and again it was Mercer jump starting the rally. With one out, the Cowboy shortstop singled, then stole second and took third on a throwing error by USF catcher Trey Manz. Rebel Ridling then delivered a two-out RBI single to make the score 4-0.
Mercer continued his hot hitting in the sixth, sparking another three-run rally for the Cowboys with another two-out hit. This time, Mercer tripled to the right-centerfield gap to plate a pair of runs. Hague followed with an RBI single to give OSU a 7-0 lead.
USF (2-2) finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh, getting a pair of runs off Cowboy reliever Robbie Weinhardt.
Weinhardt settled in and worked the final three innings to earn his first-career save. The senior right hander recorded a career-high six strikeouts.
OSU returns to action Friday when they face Northwestern at 6 p.m. (CST).
