Making The Turn With Charles Howell III

Former Oklahoma State All-American Charles Howell III was recently part of history when he was one of three OSU players named to the U.S. Presidents Cup team. The announcement marked the first time three players from one college program have played on the same team in the event. The 2000 NCAA champion was in Tulsa last week for the PGA Championship and spoke about being back in the state of Oklahoma.
How nice is it to be able to come back and play a major championship in the state where you attended college?
“It's nice anytime that you are near a place that you have friends and family. It makes it easier because golf tournaments are tough enough as it is. It's not often that friends and family can come out and see you play. They know what we do for a living, but they don't exactly get to see it. It is always nice and definitely a positive.”
What is it like to see all of those people in orange and black out there cheering you on?
“It is very nice to see that. Oklahoma has always been a great place because the people are big sports fans. OSU and OU get a lot of attention and support and you will see that this afternoon with Scott Verplank playing with Tiger (Woods). He is going to get a lot of attention and a lot of support as well and he should. That will be an interesting pairing to see and I think you will see a lot of local support for him.”
How did your time in Stillwater get you ready for life on the PGA Tour?
“I enjoyed playing for Coach Holder. That was the one big thing. Anytime that you can play for him that is a big thing. Coach Holder helped me out tremendously and that is the thing that brought me to Stillwater for sure.”
How much do you get to follow OSU golf and the athletics department overall?
“I definitely follow the school and I am a football fan, so I would like to see the football team have a big year this year. Coach Gundy has been very nice to me and I definitely follow it. I enjoy college athletics and to follow the place where you went is something I definitely do. You don't have to live there to follow it, that's for sure.”
