Mercer Named To USA Baseball National Team
June 13, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
DURHAM, N.C. Â Oklahoma State's Jordy Mercer has been selected to the 20-man roster for the 2007 USA Baseball National Team, it was announced by USA Baseball on Wednesday.
Mercer, a shortstop and right-handed pitcher from Taloga, Okla., recently completed his sophomore season for the Cowboys.
“It's going to be awesome to represent my country playing baseball,” Mercer said. “I'm definitely honored to be picked to have ÂUSA' on the front of my jersey.
“A lot of guys don't get a chance to do something like this, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play with a bunch of great players and see how I match up with some of the best players in the world.”
Mercer missed the first part of his sophomore season in '07 recovering from knee surgery, but he returned to the lineup and hit .299 with five home runs and 24 RBIs in 40 games. He was also 3-1 with three saves and a 3.81 ERA in 11 appearances on the mound and earned second-team All-Big 12 Conference honors as a utility player.
As a freshman in 2006, Mercer hit .270 with six home runs and 24 RBIs and was 5-0 with five saves on the mound to earn Freshman All-America and first-team All-Big 12 honors.
Mercer joins a select group of Oklahoma State players who have earned the honor of making a USA Baseball roster. He will be the seventh Cowboy to play for USA Baseball and the first since Ryan Budde in 2000. Also on the list are Matt Smith (1999), Brad Beanblossom (1989), Jeromy Burnitz (1989), Robin Ventura (1988) and Gary Green (1984).
“It's a great honor for Jordy, and a tremendous opportunity for him to play with some of the best players in college baseball and against some of the best amateur competition in the world,” said OSU head coach Frank Anderson.
The USA Baseball National Team is made up of the top freshmen and sophomore collegiate players from across the country and will be coached by Long Beach State head coach Mike Weathers.
“It has been a challenging and exciting past nine months as we identified and evaluated the top non-draft eligible collegiate players in the country for this program,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager, National Teams. “We are very pleased with how the final roster has come together over the past couple of weeks, and it is always rewarding for our staff to see the strong mix of USA Baseball alumni who were selected.”
The 2007 USA Baseball National Team will open its season in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) in preparation for four international series and two international events this summer. Team USA will play in the Pan Am Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the World Port Tournament in The Netherlands. The USA Baseball National Team will also host the 36th Annual USA vs. Japan Collegiate Championship Series and an Inaugural Friendship Series versus the Chinese National Team.
