Missouri Snaps Cowboys? Winning Streak
May 20, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
Oklahoma State's seven-game winning streak came to an end Friday night as Missouri defeated the Cowboys, 9-6, at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss snapped OSU's longest winning streak of the season as the 10th-ranked Cowboys fell to 38-14 overall and dropped to third in the Big 12 Conference standings at 16-9.
Mizzou (37-14, 17-8) jumped out to a quick lead against OSU starter Jeff Breedlove when Evan Frey homered to lead off the game. The Tigers added another run later in the inning, this one of the unearned variety, as a two-base error by right fielder Corey Brown allowed Brock Bond to score from first base on a single.
The Cowboys would tie the score with a pair of runs in the third. A one-out walk to Ryan Flavell started the rally, and back-to-back singles by Keanon Simon and Ty Wright loaded the bases. Brown then delivered a single of his own to plate a pair of runs and make the score 2-2.
But that score did not last as MU hit solo homers in the fourth and fifth innings to double their lead. In the fourth, a leadoff blast over the left-center field wall by John McKee put the Tigers back on top, and a round tripper by Aaron Senne in the fifth gave them a 4-2 advantage.
OSU added another run in the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly by Tyler Mach, but Mizzou again added to its lead. The Tigers got a run in the sixth, and a three-run rally in the seventh, with two of those runs of the unearned variety, gave the visitors an 8-3 edge.
The Cowboys made things interesting in the bottom of the eighth as they rallied for three runs with two outs.
After OSU's first two hitters in the inning flied out, Rebel Ridling reached on an error. Jordy Mercer then singled, and a pinch-hit double by Donnie Webb brought Ridling home. The Cowboys then got another clutch pinch hit as Kendall Horner's two-RBI single made the score 8-6.
That would be all the Cowboys would get, however, as Scooter Hicks came out of the MU bullpen and got Keanon Simon to fly out to end the inning.
Aaron Crow earned the win for Mizzou as he improved to 8-2 on the season with a nine-strikeout performance. The right hander allowed just three runs on six hits in seven innings of work. Hicks worked the final 1.1 innings for his fourth save.
Brown and Simon led the OSU offensive attack with two hits apiece, while Wright extended his hitting streak to 29 games with his third-inning single. Wright finished the contest 1-for-5.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 2 p.m.
