Cowboys Drop Series Opener To Nebraska
April 07, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
LINCOLN, Neb. - Oklahoma State's four-game winning streak came to an end Friday as the Cowboys dropped a 5-2 decision to Nebraska in the series opener at Hawks Field.
With temperatures in Lincoln in the low-to-mid 30s and winds gusting to nearly 40 miles per hour, the 11th-ranked Cowboys struggled to put runs on the board against Nebraska pitcher Tony Watson as they fell to 22-7 overall and 5-2 in Big 12 Conference play.
Watson, a junior left hander, recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts and scattered nine hits in picking up the complete-game win to improve to 3-1 on the season.
OSU fell behind in the second inning as the Cornhuskers (18-11, 4-6) plated a pair of runs against Cowboy starter Oliver Odle. Craig Corriston led off the frame with a home run, and an RBI single by Bryce Nimmo gave Nebraska a 2-0 advantage.
The Cowboys fell behind by three runs until they finally got on the scoreboard in the fifth. Following singles by Jordy Mercer and Dylan Brown, Keanon Simon delivered a sacrifice fly to score Mercer and make the score 3-1.
That would be the only run the Cowboys would get until the ninth, when Matt Mangini homered to right field to provide OSU's final run of the contest.
Odle allowed all of Nebraska's runs as the senior right hander surrendered a season-high 10 hits in 4.1 innings of work and dropped to 4-3 on the year.
Mercer and Ty Wright collected four of OSU's nine hits as each went 2-for-4 in the contest. Simon was 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 14 games.
Following Odle's exit, four Cowboy relievers combined for 3.2 scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.
OSU and Nebraska will return to action for the middle game of the series Saturday at 1:05 p.m.
