Cowboys Swept By Texas
April 29, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. Â Texas scored five unearned runs en route to a 7-0 win and a three-game sweep of Oklahoma State on Sunday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The loss dropped the 12th-ranked Cowboys into third place in the Big 12 Conference standings behind Texas and Missouri. OSU is 31-13 overall and 10-8 in league play.
With the win, Texas improved to 37-12 overall and 17-4 in the Big 12, and the Longhorns accomplished something no other team has ever done at Reynolds Stadium. With its three-game sweep, UT became the first team to ever win three consecutive games against OSU in Reynolds Stadium history, a streak which dates back to the opening of the stadium on April 4, 1981.
The loss also marked the first time OSU has been shut out at home since March 13, 1998, when the Cowboys lost to Texas A&M, 8-0.
Texas took control of the game in the third with three unearned runs off OSU starter Joe Kent. The Cowboys' sophomore southpaw surrendered back-to-back singles to Chais Fuller and Travis Tucker, and an error by first baseman Rebel Ridling loaded the bases with one out.
The Longhorns took advantage, scoring their first run on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Russell. Another walk loaded the bases, and Bradley Suttle collected an RBI when he was walked to make the score 2-0. UT added its third run on a balk by OSU reliever Justin Friend.
UT went up 4-0 on a sacrifice fly by Fuller in the sixth, and the visitors added three more runs in the seventh.
OSU managed just six hits in the loss. Two of those were by Ty Wright, who extended his hitting streak to 21 games with a 2-for-4 effort. The Cowboys' senior left fielder also moved into third place on OSU's all-time hit list with 280.
Kent, who lasted just 2.2 innings, dropped to 4-1 on the season, while UT starter Austin Wood allowed only three hits in six innings to improve to 6-1.
The Cowboys return to action when they open the Bedlam series against rival Oklahoma on Friday at Drillers Stadium in Tulsa. The opener is set for 7:35 p.m., before the series shifts to Oklahoma City's AT&T Bricktown Ballpark for the final two games. Saturday's contest is scheduled for 7:35 p.m., with Sunday's finale set for 4:05 p.m.
