Cowboys Win Series With 9-6 Victory In Finale
April 16, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State won its third Big 12 Conference series of the season with a 9-6 triumph over Kansas State on Monday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the win, the 14th-ranked Cowboys improved to 27-9 overall and 8-4 in Big 12 play, and they have now won nine of their last 10 conference series dating back to last season.
For the 21st time this season, OSU scored in the first inning, getting a pair of runs off KSU starter Ben Hornbeck. Ty Wright led off the bottom of the first with a double, and after Corey Brown walked, Tyler Mach delivered a two-RBI double to right-center field to give the Pokes a 2-0 advantage.
The Wildcats (23-13, 5-7) trimmed their deficit in half in the second, getting a sacrifice fly from Rob Vaughn to plate Eli Rumler from third and make the score 2-1.
OSU added a run in the second on an RBI double by Wright, and the Cowboys went up 4-1 in the third on a solo home run by Rebel Ridling, the junior first baseman's sixth of the season.
The Cowboys' lead did not last, however, as KSU rallied for four runs in the fourth and knocked OSU starter Matt Gardner from the game. The Wildcats tied the score on a two-RBI single by Derek Bunker and took a 5-4 lead on a run-scoring single by Drew Biery off OSU reliever Justin Friend.
K-State's lead was also short lived, as the Cowboys took the lead back for good in the bottom of the fourth. Three-straight walks loaded the bases for Mach, who smacked two-run single to left field to put OSU up 6-5.
That score held until the seventh, when OSU rallied for three runs. Corey Brown led off the inning with a towering home run over the wall in center field, and four batters later, Jordy Mercer blasted a two-run homer to left to give the Cowboys a 9-5 lead.
Brown's homer was his team-leading 15th of the season, while Mercer's shot marked his third of the year.
Friend would earn the win on the mound as he worked the final 5.1 innings and allowed just one run on two hits while striking out four. The junior right hander improved to 4-2 with the win.
Mach finished the contest 2-for-4 with four RBIs and extended his hitting streak to 14 games, tying him with Keanon Simon for the longest hitting streak by a Cowboy this season.
Wright also extended his hitting streak with a 2-for-4 day and has now hit safely in 13 consecutive contests.
OSU will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff for a pair of mid-week games on Tuesday and Wednesday before heading to College Station, Texas, for a weekend series against Texas A&M.
