April 01, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's explosive offense was on display Saturday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the Cowboys earned a pair of wins over Baylor, opening the doubleheader with a 15-5 run-rule win in seven innings and then earning a 14-7 win in the nightcap.
The 14th-ranked Cowboys bashed seven home runs on the day, including five in the opener, as they improved to 21-6 overall and 4-1 in Big 12 Conference play. Baylor dropped to 16-13 overall and 2-6 in the league.
The Big 12's leading offensive team, OSU racked up 31 hits on Saturday, with Jordy Mercer's five hits leading the way. Rebel Ridling had seven RBIs on the day, while Mercer collected six.
Ridling was the offensive star in the opener as he finished 3-for-5 with two homers and a career-high six RBIs.
In the opener, OSU fell behind in the top of the second as Baylor touched Cowboy starter Oliver Odle for a pair of runs.
But the Cowboys responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Matt Mangini started the rally with a single, and after a Ty Wright walk, Ridling delivered a three-run home run to center field to give OSU a 3-2 lead.
The third inning was even bigger, and again it was Ridling providing a big blow. The Cowboys erupted for five runs on five hits in the inning, getting two-run homers from both Mangini and Ridling and an RBI single from Ryan Flavell.
OSU's final homer of the game came in the seventh, a solo shot off the bat of Mercer that gave the Cowboys the 10-run advantage needed for the run-rule victory.
Ridling, Mercer and Wright each collected three hits in the opener, while Mangini and Keanon Simon had two hits apiece.
Odle picked up the win as he struck out four in four innings of work, while Josh Fritsche worked the final three innings for his first-career save.
In the nightcap, OSU again fell behind in the second inning, this time by a 3-0 margin.
Mercer trimmed the Bears' lead to 3-1 with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, and OSU tied the score in the third as Wright and Ridling each drove in runs.
A three-run fourth inning gave the Cowboys the lead for good, and it was Mangini who put OSU ahead with a three-run homer to center field.
Baylor battled back and pulled to within two runs of OSU's lead, but the Cowboys put the game away in the eighth.
OSU rallied for five runs in their final at bat, and Mercer provided four of them with a mammoth grand slam that carried into the Cowgirl softball complex.
Robbie Weinhardt earned the win in the nightcap as he worked 3.2 innings in relief of starter Joe Kent and allowed three runs on four hits. Justin Friend picked up his team-leading third save as he tossed the final 2.1 innings and struck out five.
Mercer was 2-for-5 with five RBIs in the game, while Simon, Brown and Tyler Mach each had three hits. With a 3-for-6 effort, Simon extended his hitting streak to 12 games, the longest by a Cowboy this season.
OSU will go for the series sweep Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
