Cowboys in Second after First Session of Big 12 Wrestling Championships

Oklahoma State advanced five wrestlers into the finals of the Big 12 Wrestling Championships and trailed Iowa State by three points in the team race at the Hearnes Center in Columbia, Mo., on early Saturday afternoon.

The Cyclones accumulated 44 points, while OSU is in second with 41 points with the consolation and finals still to wrestle.

Coleman Scott became OSU's first finalist with an 11-1 major decision over Oklahoma's Brian Shelton. Scott was the only Cowboy who looked good in the semifinals.

At 165, Nebraska's Stephen Dwyer reversed OSU's top-ranked Johny Hendricks to his back, but Hendricks got out of it and held on for an 8-5 decision.

Brandon Mason did not need overtime to defeat OU's Josh Weitzel. The last meeting, Mason won in the fourth sudden victory period, but a third period reverse and near fall gave Mason a 6-0 victory.

Nathan Morgan advanced to the finals with a one-point victory over Iowa State's Mitch Mueller at 141, and Jared Rosholt secured a berth in the finals with a third period takedown over Missouri's Mark Ellis.

The Cowboys and Cyclones both placed five wrestlers in the finals, while Missouri and Nebraska each had four. Ten Points separates the top four teams, while Oklahoma is in fifth with 20 points.

The consolation round and third-place matches begin at 4 p.m. Tyler Shinn will wrestle for third at 125, while B.J. Jackson, Newly McSpadden and Jared Shelton all have to wrestle a consolation match first.
