Cowboys Slug Their Way To Win Over Western Illinois

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State erupted for seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 17-1 win over Western Illinois on Tuesday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The 14th-ranked Cowboys racked up a season-high 24 hits as they improved to 13-4 on the season, while WIU dropped to 9-8.
OSU used a pair of home runs to take the big early lead. Tyler Mach got the scoring started with an RBI single, and Matt Mangini followed with a towering two-run home to make the score 3-0. The big blow of the inning came when Matt Lopez hit a shot off the wall in center field that resulted in an inside-the-park grand slam and a seven-run lead for the Cowboys.
The Cowboys added four runs to their lead in the third. Brown and Rebel Ridling each collected RBI singles, and Mach drove in a pair of runs with a double.
WIU plated its only run in the sixth on a single by Brett Pendell, but OSU answered with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
In that frame, Lopez, Ty Wright and Ridling each had RBIs, and Brown blasted his team-leading sixth homer of the season, a two-run shot to the opposite field.
Picking up the win on the mound was freshman Andrew Oliver, who earned his team-leading fourth victory of the season with a six-inning effort. The southpaw improved to 4-0 as he allowed just one run on four hits and recorded a career-high six strikeouts.
Brown extended his hitting streak to seven games with a 3-for-4, four-RBI night, while Mach tied a season high with four hits and also collected three RBIs.
Lopez continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-4 effort that included a career-high five RBIs.
The two teams will close out the series Wednesday at 3 p.m.
