Cowboys Win Series Finale Against Cal State-Northridge
February 26, 2007 | Cowboy Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Oklahoma State avoided a series sweep at the hands of Cal State-Northridge as the No. 16 Cowboys topped CSUN, 10-7, in Sunday's series finale at Matador Field.
Freshman Andrew Oliver earned the win on the mound as the Cowboys improved to 6-3 with the win, while the loss dropped CSUN to 10-7.
With Oliver on the mound, OSU fell behind by a 3-0 count in the bottom of the first inning. The Matadors got an RBI groundout from C.J. Belanger to take a 1-0 lead and added a second run when Todd Shelton scored from second on a two-base error by Matt Mangini. The third run came on an RBI single by Kris Kasarjian.
The Cowboys answered in the top of the second. Steve Ptak reached on an error and would score on a double by Rebel Ridling to make the score 3-1.
OSU erased its deficit and tied the score in the third against CSUN starter Chuck Fick. Keanon Simon led off the frame with a single, and Corey Brown plated him with an opposite-field double. Brown would later score on a double play to knot the score at 3-3.
Coach Frank Anderson's club took its first lead of the contest in the sixth with a three-run rally that saw the Cowboys collect just one hit.
In the pivotal sixth, Ryan Flavell walked to open the inning, and after a single by Matt Lopez and an intentional walk to Corey Brown loaded the bases, Fick uncorked a wild pitch to score pinch runner Kevin David. OSU went up 5-3 when Mangini drew a bases-loaded walk, and the Cowboys increased their advantage to three on a sacrifice fly by John Schindler.
OSU increased its lead in the seventh with a pair of runs, and the Cowboys added insurance runs in each of the final two innings.
Oliver picked up the win as the southpaw improved to 2-0 with a six-inning outing. After the shaky start, Oliver did not allow a hit or a run over his final five innings of work, and he finished with five strikeouts.
Junior Justin Friend came on in relief and worked the final four innings to earn the first save of his OSU career. The right hander recorded eight strikeouts and allowed just two earned runs.
Ridling led the Cowboys' offensively with a 3-for-5 day, while Simon and Brown were each 2-for-5 at the plate.
OSU returns to action Tuesday with their first home appearance of the season when the Cowboys take on Dallas Baptist at 3 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
