Pablo Martin Advances To Semifinals At Western Amateur
August 06, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The Malaga, Spain native was one of three players with OSU ties to reach the 16-player match play tree as Tyler Leon and Jonathan Moore moved on from the stroke play portion of the tournament as well.
Martin, who will be a junior this season and was seeded No. 12, snuck past fifth-seeded Billy Horschel with a 2 and 1 victory during his first-round match. In the round of eight, the 2006 college player of the year took down the No. 13 seed Erik Flores by a 5 and 4 count.
Leon entered match play as the No. 16 seed and squared off with the event's stroke play medalist in Won Joon Lee. The Cowboy senior-to-be picked up a 2 and 1 victory before falling 2 and 1 to eighth-seeded Scott Pieri. Pieri defeated Moore 2 and 1 in the first round to advance to his second-round matchup against Leon.
Martin will take on Pieri tomorrow morning with the winner advancing to compete against the winner of the match between Dawie Van Der Walt and Bronson LaCassie. The championship match is slated to be contested Sunday afternoon.
