Martin Shines In European Palmer Cup Victory
June 30, 2006 | Cowboy Golf
The Malaga, Spain native finished the event with a 4-0 mark overall.
For the morning foursome matches, Martin was once again paired with fellow Spaniard Alejandro Cañizares of Arizona State and claimed the squad's first point of the day with a 6 and 5 victory against Duke's Ryan Blaum and Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro. The Americans won the first hole before a U.S. bogey on the second moved the match to all square. The Spaniards would go on to win the fourth, fifth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 13th holes.
During the afternoon round, Martin took on Castro and claimed a 3 and 2 victory. The OSU junior-to-be had to come from behind twice in his match against Castro. Castro birdied the first hole before Martin evened the match with a birdie on No. 3.
Castro retook the lead on the next hole with a conceded birdie but Martin won both the sixth and seventh. Martin would extend the lead to 4-up by claiming Nos. 11-13. A Castro birdie at the 15th reduced the lead to three but he could not cut the lead any further as both players parred the 16th.
The European victory is its second-straight in Europe and third of the last four. The United States now leads the series, 5-4-1.
