Cowboys Fall Short In Bid To Sweep Series
April 16, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
OSU starter Rick Rivas (1-2) was roughed up for six runs in the fourth and fifth innings as the Cowboys fell to 21-12 overall and 5-7 in Big 12 play.
The Cowboys opened the scoring in the bottom of the third on Keanon Simon's solo home run to right-center field. The blast was Simon's second homer of the series and third of the season.
OSU added to that lead when Deik Scram followed Tyler Mach's two-out single with a homer over the center-field wall to make the score 3-0 after three innings of play.
In the fifth, another three-run rally gave KU the lead. Jared Schweitzer drove in the first run with a single, and Erik Morrison's two-RBI single made the score 6-3.
OSU answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. Matt Clarkson led off the frame with a single and advanced to third on a double by Simon. Jordy Mercer's sacrifice fly scored Clarkson, and Simon came home on an RBI single by Tyler Mach to make the score 6-5.
The game's final run came on Land's solo home run in the bottom of the sixth. Land finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
KU starter Kodiak Quick went five innings for the victory to improve to 7-2, and closer Don Czyz allowed just two hits in four scoreless innings of relief for his 13th save.
Simon led the OSU with three hits in five at bats. The junior finished the series against the Jayhawks 8-for-13 with five RBIs.
Mach and Adam Carr each went 2-for-4 for the Cowboys.
OSU returns to action Wednesday when the Cowboys host
