Cowboys Drop Big 12 Opener At Texas, 10-5

The loss snapped OSU's six-game winning streak as the Cowboys dropped to 15-5 on the season.
OSU got on the scoreboard early with a pair of runs in its first at bat. With one out, Jordy Mercer was hit by a pitch from McCulloch, who then committed an error that allowed Shelby Ford to reach first base safely. With Cowboys on first and second, Tyler Mach doubled down the left-field line, scoring both Mercer and Ford to make the score 2-0.
The Longhorns took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, sending eight batters to the plate and scoring four runs off OSU starter Oliver Odle (3-3).
The scoring started when Bradley Suttle lined out to left field, sending Jordan Danks home from third to make the score 2-1. Kyle Russell followed with a two-run home run over the right-field wall to give UT the lead, and the Longhorns made the score 4-2 on an RBI double by Preston Clark.
The home team added five more runs in the seventh and eighth frames in a game in which coach Augie Garrido's club collected a season-high 16 hits, seven of those of the extra-base variety.
OSU struggled against McCulloch as the UT right hander struck out 12 Cowboys in eight innings of work. He allowed just one earned run on five hits to improve to 2-4 on the season.
The Cowboys finally got back on the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings.
In the eighth, Corey Brown led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI groundout by Ford. In its final at bat, OSU plated a pair of runs as Kendall Horner drove in the first run of his collegiate career with a double. Mercer later drove Horner in with an RBI single.
The two teams return to action for the second game in the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
