Cowboys? Win Streak Continues With Doubleheader Sweep Of Stony Brook
March 18, 2006 | Cowboy Baseball
The Cowboys escaped with a 3-2 win in the opener compliments of a Tyler Mach home run, and then came back in the nightcap to claim a 10-2 victory. OSU improved to 14-4 with Friday's twinbill, while Stony Brook remained winless at 0-12.
In the opener, Stony Brook took the game's initial lead in the top of the fourth inning when Isidro Fortuna smashed a two-run homer to left field off OSU starter Oliver Odle. Fortuna's shot also scored Kyle Traylor, who had doubled earlier in the inning, to make the score 2-0.
The Seawolves held that two-run lead until the sixth thanks to pitcher Matt Restivo. The senior southpaw allowed just one hit in the first five innings, that a single by Mach.
But the drought ended for the OSU offense in the bottom of the sixth. Ty Wright walked to lead off the inning, and Shelby Ford followed with a bunt single. Following Ford, Mach finally got OSU on the scoreboard with a three-run home run that stayed just inside the left-field foul pole to give the home team a 3-2 lead. The homer was Mach's team leading sixth of the season.
Mach's homer would be all Odle would need as the junior improved to 3-2 by hurling the first complete game by a Cowboy pitcher this season. The junior right hander scattered seven hits and struck out five. He did not allow a walk.
OSU got its offense on track early in the nightcap as leadoff hitter Corey Brown homered to left field on the second pitch he saw from Stony Brook starter Kris Bakey (0-3).
The scoring did not stop there as the Cowboys equaled their run total from the first game in the first inning of game two. Keanon Simon followed Brown with a single, and three batters later, Deik Scram delivered an RBI double to make the score 2-0. An RBI single by Rebel Ridling capped OSU's three-run first inning.
Stony Brook pulled to within 3-1 in the third inning on an RBI single by Fortuna, but that was as close as it would get as the Cowboys put up six runs in their next three at-bats to take command.
Another three-run inning, this one coming in the fifth, put the game out of reach. In that inning, Adam Carr's single with the bases loaded brought home two runs, while Jordy Mercer also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Southpaw Charles Benoit picked up the win on the mound, matching Odle for the team-high in wins as he improved to 3-1. The sophomore allowed just one run while striking out seven in six innings of work.
Oklahoma State is scheduled to face the Seawolves in the third game of the four-game series Saturday at 2 p.m. Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m.
