February 13, 2006 | Cowboy Wrestling
Oklahoma State dropped a tight dual losing to Minnesota in the final bout of the evening as the Gophers won 19-16 in front of 4,110 fans inside the Ford Center in Oklahoma City.
The dual came down to the heavyweights after Jake Rosholt recorded a major decision to tie it.
Steve Mocco and Cole Konrad wrestled a typical match each recording an escape going into overtime tied at one. An exhausted Mocco took a shot at Konrad, but he couldn't get back to his feet and Konrad got behind him for the match and dual winning takedown.
“There are certain matches where we need to do more,” head coach John Smith said. “We are not putting it all out there and we need to focus on putting it all out there.
“You have to give them credit. They were the aggressor in several matches and it kept us from picking up upsets. They have beaten us twice now, they are the best team.”
Coleman Scott got the Cowboys off to a good start in the dual. Scott got an early takedown and rode out the first period. He had a sizable lead over Travis Land in the third period, but gave up a late takedown and won by a decision, 12-5.
Mack Reiter was the more aggressive wrestler early against OSU's Nathan Morgan. The advantage turned in the second period when Morgan rode Reiter for the full two minutes. The two wrestlers went into the third period with no score. Morgan escaped in nine seconds to take the lead in the match. Morgan avoided getting taken down and gave up a stalling point, but riding time gave Morgan the victory.
Manuel Rivera evened the dual sending OSU's Justin Porter to his back and pinning him in the third period. Dustin Schlatter put Zack Esposito on his back twice in the second period scoring a major decision to give
John Smith can always rely on Johny Hendricks to win a crucial match and Hendricks did just that. Hendricks did not score an offensive point the entire match but he took it to Matt Nagel for the full seven minutes and earned two stalling points to win by a decision, 3-1.
The 174-pound match was critical for the Cowboys if they still wanted to win the dual. Brandon Mason got the job done bringing the Cowboys to within a point. Mason scored the only takedown in the second period and came away with a 3-1 decision to make the dual 13-12.
