Oklahoma State Baseball Media Day Quotes
HEAD COACH FRANK ANDERSON
On the new season
“It is a new season, a new time for us. We are excited about it. We have a lot of new guys. We probably have the best quality of athletes as I have seen here in the past three years. As always, pitching is going to be a big key for us. We feel as though we have quality pitching and we still need to identify some roles as far as who can finish a game for us, which is always a big thing.”
On the 2006 schedule
“At this point, we are close enough that we need to play some games to identify those roles against other teams. We need to get out there and identify some of our mistakes and come home and work on them. Our schedule is kind of set up that way. We go on the road to a pretty tough tournament right off the bat (Mobile, Ala.) and then we give ourselves some time to come back and play at home for a while to go over some of the things that we learned.”
On the Cowboy offense
“From the offensive side, we feel like we have the best talent we have ever had up and down the order. We can run and we have a chance to have some power and we look to be able to play some defense. We still have to sell a few spots, but for the most part, we can put a quality starter at every position.”
On the OSU Athletic Village plans
“At this point, we probably are not that far into it. We are thinking about it though. We have identified some conferences and looked at stadium sizes in various conferences. We have just done some size comparisons. “
On the Big 12 Conference in 2006
“I am a little biased, of course. I think we are the best league in the country. It took us a while to prove that, but now I think we are the dominant league in the country. Last year, the pitching was the best the league has ever had, I thought. I think it will be very good this year, also. Top to bottom, I think Texas, obviously was voted in the top, and rightly so. Then, everyone is good in our league. It has shown by our records and how we have done nationally in the past.”
OSU PLAYER QUOTES
SENIOR CATCHER ADAM CARR
On making the switch to catcher
“I like it. I grew up watching my brother play catcher, and I have always wanted to do it. I kind of got held back from doing that because I always played pitcher, and I didn't want to mix them together. It's been a lot of fun back there, and I really take pride in it. Blocking is the toughest thing, but that is just going to come with more games and more practice. It seems to be coming along pretty well.”
On the offense
“I think we have guys that have come in that have power. I think we have the same capabilities as last year. We just have a better group this year.”
JUNIOR LEFT FIELDER TY WRIGHT
On the differences between this year and last year “The one thing that I really noticed was people coming to the field because they wanted to be at the field and not because they had to. We had so many people show up early for practice just wanting to be there and be around this group of guys that we have. Everybody loves to play the game. We all get along really well. We all like each other and we would all do anything for each other. Whenever you got that, it is really good as far as chemistry goes.”
On being left out of last year's NCAA tournament
“It hurt a lot especially because we played 56 games really hard and things didn't go our way. It hurts, but at the same time it motivates us. We came out this year very strong in the fall. This is my third year here, and I don't think that there has been a fall that we have worked harder than we did this year as far as practice goes with lifting, running and conditioning. I think that it really set the mood for what happened in the fall and what will happen in the future at this university.”
On the offense
“I think it is hard to label expectations so early on, especially when we haven't played any games. We have guys that want to go out there and do well so we just need to get into some game situations and fail some so we can build on that, learn from our failures and keep going out there and growing.”
SENIOR PITCHER RICK RIVAS
On the pitching staff
“This year, we have a lot more depth. We have a lot of guys that can do certain things in certain situations. I'm impressed with some of the freshmen. They're pretty dang good, which is a good thing for the program in the future. It's very competitive on the mound right now.”
On his personal expectations
“Being a senior, I hope to provide leadership to the staff, and I hope to be in the weekend rotation. If not, then come out of the bullpen in tough situations and get people out.”
On starting
“Right now, we've got six guys that can be legitimate starters, so every weekend I'm trying to prove in intrasquad scrimmages that I'm going to be the man out there and provide the leadership. Last year, I had my moments where I shined and where I failed, but I think they made me tougher and stronger for this upcoming season.”
On having a powerful offense
“It definitely makes your job easier. You can't relax too much. If you ease up just a little bit, you can turn the other team's offense into just as explosive. But at the same time, if you give up two runs early in the game, it's not going to be a big deal because I know I've got some good bats behind me.”
