Media Day Quotes
Head Coach Frank Anderson
On this years team
We dont have a lot of returning guys. We have a lot of new faces in different positions. We have over 20 new players on the field, so it is going to take us a while to learn how to win at this level. I like our group. It is an athletic group. They are eager to learn. I think that depth-wise we will be a lot better than last year.
On the pitching staff
We have not defined any roles yet, specifically, but we have some options that I dont think we had last year. We can throw three or four guys in middle relief and then bring in a closer. I like our depth, and with the guys in the middle we can throw right or left and do some combination things. I like our numbers pitching-wise, and the roles are ever evolving. I think it will be that way until the second or third week of the conference season.
On the offense
We want to have more offense than what we had last year. We want to run a little more, do some things like hit and runs that we havent done in the past. We would like to steal some more bases, and I think we have a little more power than we did last year throughout the lineup.
On the schedule
We have a little bit of everything. Its tough to get a home series after the success Coach Ward and Coach Holliday had. I like our schedule. We have some home games that we need to try and get ourselves ready for the Big 12 schedule. This club, physically, is a pretty talented team, but we dont have our own personality. Playing at home allows us a little more of a comfort to develop a personality and some type of character.
Junior Infielder Chris Gutierrez
On the junior college transfers
They are more talented. This is the most talent that we have had here in my three years. There are going to be guys that might not play that could play Division I somewhere else. The talent level has definitely picked up from the last two years.
On Thomas Cowley
He pounds the strike so much. He doesnt ever give in to you. You can be up 3-0 and he will still throw it right there. He works in and out real well. He changes speeds well, but he mostly works off of his fastball. That is what makes any college pitcher successful. He can throw his fastball for a strike and then get the other pitches over. Thomas can throw all three of his pitches for a strike ever single time, and thats his key.
Senior Infielder Rusty Ryal
On Thomas Cowley
His ability to locate his fastball inside on right-handed hitters for a strike more times than not is pretty effective. You dont see the ball until he lets it go, and then you have to pick it up and make the adjustment. He has good velocity, pitches smart and has a good offspeed pitch.
On the offense
We have a lot more team speed overall. We are going to be able to hit and run a lot better. We have guys that hit for power but also handle the bat well. Overall, I like the quality throughout the lineup better than we had last year.
Junior Pitcher Thomas Cowley
On his expectations
It was fun coming out of nowhere last year. It was nice to get some attention. Im ready, Im not scared at all, I think Im up to the challenge. Im just ready to get started, I cant wait for the weekend to roll around and to see how our team reacts. I dont really care what other people expect of me. I expect it for myself, obviously. I want to do well and the team to do well.
Senior Pitcher Scott Richmond
On his expectations
Quality innings whenever I get the chance. I feel comfortable on the mound no matter what Im doing. Last year I did a little bit of everything and it worked out pretty well. This year, I have a year under my belt, and wherever coach needs me I want to go out and help the team win as much as possible.
On his role
Ive been starting my whole life. A starter is what I am. Last year I did some relief and it worked out well, so obviously I can do that just as well. Its a matter of how well my arm bounces back.
