Daniel Cormier Finishes Fourth in Olympic Debut
August 30, 2004 | Cowboy Wrestling
Cormier was shutout 5-0 by Russian Khadjimourat Gatsalov to be knocked into the bronze medal match.
In the bronze medal match, Cormier scored first at the start of the second period when Iranian Heidari broke his grip first. That was the way the score remained until overtime since neither wrestler had scored three points.
Cormier was awarded another point in overtime when Heidari was cautioned a second time during the clinch. Cormier needed one more point to end the match, but it was the Iranian who came up with two takedowns to tie the score at two.
After the second takedown, Cormier received a passivity call and was forced to start on the mat. Heidari was able to roll him and expose his back to earn a point and a medal.
