UCF advanced to the regional championship round against host
The Golden Knights had three straight walks in the 10th, with the leadoff runner erased at second on a caught stealing by Jason Jaramillo. Bono then hit a shot to right for the game winner off of reliever Travis Ingle (0-3).
The Cowboys had a furious rally in the ninth to tie the game at 9-9. OSU trailed 9-6 and loaded the bases with two outs and two strikes on Rusty Ryal before he cleared the bases with a double to left-center.
Keanon Simon led the Pokes with three hits on the night, while Rod Allen, Mario Matulich and Ty Wright had two hits each.
The Cowboys scored a run on a RBI groundout by Jason Jaramillo to take a 1-0 first inning lead.
UCF responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits by Dee Brown and Ryan Bono.
Rod Allen's RBI double in the second tied the game, but the Golden Knights took back the lead with a RBI single by Jon Cooper in the bottom of the inning.
UCF added an unearned run in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-2. The Knights added two more runs in the fifth to extend the lead to 6-2.
The contest was delayed for an hour and 25 minutes due to lightning in the area with two outs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Cowboys rallied for three runs in the sixth to cut the deficit to 6-5. Scott Kirby and Thomas Incaviglia were both hit by pitches and advanced to second and third on a groundout to first by Rod Allen. Chris Gutierrez then flew out to left and was followed by Rusty Ryal who had an unusual at bat. Ryal ducked under a pitch by UCF pitcher Taylor Meier but the ball hit his bat and rolled into fair territory. Meier tried to throw him out at first, but the first baseman muffed the throw allowing two runs to score. Ty Wright then plated Ryal with a double to right center off of reliever Tim Bascom to cut the lead to 6-5.
Clay Timpner pushed the advantage up to 7-5 on a solo homer to right off of reliever Dane Mason.
Rod Allen's RBI single in the seventh cut the lead to 7-6.
The game marked the end of the collegiate career of seniors Scott Kirby, Mario Matulich, Rod Allen, John Forrest, Daniel Rew and Travis Ingle.
