What's On Tap
Oklahoma State hosts Louisiana Tech in a three-game series starting on Friday at 4 p.m. The Cowboys will play seven of their next nine games at home, with only next weeks two-game series against Arizona State on the road.
The Cowboys and Bulldogs will meet at 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. The teams have met seven times previously on the diamond, but this weekend is La. Tech's first trip to Stillwater.
About Louisiana Tech
Louisiana Tech is 8-11 on the season after dropping a pair of midweek games to Lamar at home. The Bulldogs upset Alabama, 6-1, last Friday at the Centenary Tournament in Shreveport.
LTU is a young ballclub with just four position starters and no starting pitchers returning from last year's team that went 18-34-1 in head coach Wade Simoneaux's first season.
Junior third baseman Stephen Winters leads the Bulldogs with a .377 batting average to go along with two homers and nine RBIs. The team batting average is .283 with 16 homers and 111 runs scored in 19 games.
Junior college transfer Clayton Meyer leads the Bulldog pitching staff with a 2-1 record and 2.38 ERA. He is coming off a complete game win over Alabama, where he limited the Crimson Tide to five hits, while striking out six and walking just one. The Bulldogs staff ERA is 6.05 with 123 strikeouts and 97 walks in 19 games.
Broadcast Info
Every Oklahoma State game will be broadcast this season on the KSPI network of stations. Rex Holt, host of the extremely popular “The Game” talk radio show, will once again call all of the action for the Cowboys.
Friday's game will follow the Cowboy Basketball broadcast on 93.7 FM, while Saturday and Sunday's games can be found on 780 AM.
This season, fans can also catch the audio action for free on the internet through www.okstate.com. All of the Cowboy home games and select road games will also have a live video feed through the Cowboy MVP subscription service through www.okstate.com.
Lake Area Classic Recap
Oklahoma State went 2-1 at the Lake Area Classic last weekend. The Cowboys battled back and forth with McNeese State before holding on for a 7-6 win on Saturday. The Pokes then faced off against nationally ranked Southern Miss and lost 21-5, before rebounding with a 14-2 win over Indiana State to close out the tournament on Sunday.
The Cowboys' were locked in a pitcher's dual between OSU's ace Spencer Grogan and MSU's Chris Denton for six innings with the score tied at 1-1. McNeese scored three runs off of Grogan in the bottom of the seventh to take a 4-1 lead, but the Pokes responded with a pair of homers in the eighth to score four runs and take a 5-4 lead. After McNeese tied it in the bottom of the inning, OSU came back to score two runs in the top of the ninth and held on for the win.
USM broke open a 2-1 game with five runs in the fourth and eight runs in the sixth to cruise to their eighth straight win.
The Cowboy bats came alive against Indiana State on Sunday, with 15 hits and 14 runs against the Sycamores. Reliever DeWayne Carver picked up his first win in an OSU uniform, with three innings of scoreless relief. Rod Allen had the big RBI day with four, while Jason Jaramillo and Chris Gutierrez both had three hits to help lead the way.
Kirby Having Solid Year
Scott Kirby came to Oklahoma State as a power-hitting junior college transfer out of California a year ago. The San Rafael native struggled offensively to open the 2003 campaign, batting just .208 after 18 games played through March 24. Consistent hard work both at the plate and in the outfield has made him into one of the more valuable performers on the 2004 team. Kirby closed out last season with hits in both Big 12 tournament games and has hit safely in every game this year. He had a good week at the plate, batting .400 (6-for-14) with two doubles, a triple, a homer, six RBIs and four runs scored in four games. Currently Kirby is fourth on the team with a .333 batting average and second in RBIs with 17.
Jaramillo Named To Bench Award List
Junior catcher Jason Jaramillo was named to the Johnny Bench Award Watch List recently, marking the third time in his career he has made the list. The award recognizes the top catcher in the country in a ceremony after the baseball season in Wichita, Kan.
Jaramillo was a semifinalist last season after leading the Cowboys with a .385 batting average. He was invited to the Team USA trials and spent the summer helping lead the Orleans Cardinals to the Cape Cod League championship with current teammate Rod Allen.
The Franksville, Wisc., product has battled through a sore ankle and is currently third on the team with a .340 batting average. He has also banged two homers with 11 RBIs and is second on the squad with a .431 on base percentage.
Defensively, Jaramillo has picked off one runner while throwing out six of 13 base runners thus far.
Cowboy Notes
The Cowboys are opening a stretch of eight games in 10 days ... Daniel Rew's 0.94 ERA is second in the conference ... Josh Fields is 15th in the Big 12 in batting average at .377 ... Scott Kirby's two triples is tied for second in the league ... DeWayne Carver pitched 5.1 innings of two-hit scoreless relief in two outings last week with six strikeouts and one walk ... OSU .310 batting average and .970 fielding percentage are fourth best in the Big 12 ... The Pokes have been outscored 14-4 in the first inning this year ... Two of the Cowboys four losses have come in five home games ... Rod Allen has a six-game hitting streak entering the weekend.
On Deck
Oklahoma State will take a rare midweek trip during Spring Break to Tempe to take on Arizona State next Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 p.m. CT.
The Sun Devils are 15-2 on the year and ranked in the Top 10 of all four major polls. ASU is in the midst of a 24-game homestand and will take on Top 25 opponent Tulane this weekend.
The Pokes will then return home for four games, starting with a three-game series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next weekend. The Crusaders are 11-11 on the year and host Texas-Arlington this weekend.
Coach Anderson Radio Show
Fans can listen to coach Frank Anderson on his weekly radio show every Monday from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on 93.7 KSPI FM. The show will be hosted by Rex Holt and will take place at Freddie Paul's Steakhouse in Stillwater.
Coach Anderson will also have a weekly television show that will debut later in the season.
