Scott Baker Leads Oklahoma State Trio In Baseball Draft

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State junior pitchers Scott Baker and Shane Hawk and senior centerfielder Jose Virgil were all drafted on the first day of Major League Baseball's Amateur Baseball Draft Tuesday afternoon.

Baker was selected by Minnesota in the second round with the 58th pick overall. Ironically, it is the highest an Oklahoma State player has gone in the amateur draft since volunteer assistant coach Jason Bell was picked in the second round by the Twins (49th overall) in 1995.

Baker, the Dallas Morning News Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, went 10-5 in 2003 with a 3.79 ERA. He was a first-team All-Big 12 pick by the league coaches and finished the regular season as the conference leader in wins. His career record at Oklahoma State is 22-10 with a 3.98 ERA. The Shreveport, La., native was previously drafted out of high school in the 36th round by Pittsburgh in 2000.

Junior southpaw Shane Hawk was selected by the New York Mets in the fourth round, the 109th pick overall. The second-team All-Big 12 choice went 7-3 with a 3.06 ERA in 22 relief appearances this year. The Midwest City product was previously drafted out of high school in the 40th round by Atlanta in 2000.

Senior Jose Virgil was drafted in the 18th round by the St. Louis Cardinals with the 545th overall selection. Virgil wrapped up his three-year career at OSU with his finest season, hitting at a .381 clip with 11 homers, 23 doubles and 54 RBIs. The Phoenix, Ariz., native was a first team All-Big 12 selection this year

The Cowboys also had 2004 signee Anthony Whittington, a left-handed pitcher from Buffalo High School in West Virginia, selected in the second round (60th overall) by Anaheim.

Rounds 20-50 of the draft will take place tomorrow afternoon.
