Missouri Holds Off Oklahoma State 14-11

The combination of Jayce Tingler, Ian Kinsler and Stillwater native Cody Ehlers combined to go 12-for-16 with eight RBIs and six runs scored at the top of the order for the Tigers. Tingler went 4-5 and scored three times, Kinsler went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and Ehlers went 4-for-5 with three RBIs.
Chris Gutierrez had a career night going 5-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI and John Urick belted two homeruns and drove home three runners for the Cowboys.
OSU fell to 29-18 and 11-9 in Big 12 action, while MU improved their season record to 31-16 and 13-9 in conference play. The loss snapped a 14 game winning streak against Missouri in Stillwater and a nine-game winning streak dating back to the 1998 season
Andy Shipman picked up the win in relief to improve his record to 7-2, while Cowboy starter Joe Weaver fell behind early and took the loss to drop to 3-5 on the season.
Weaver got off to an inauspicious start in the first inning by walking three hitters, who all scored. Ehlers drove in the first run with a double to left center. Weaver walked the bases loaded and James Boone made him pay with a two-run single up the middle. Missouri executed a double steal and Kyle Johnson scored on the play to give the Tigers a 4-0 lead.
The Cowboys added a single run in the third when Gutierrez singled through the vacated hole on the left side to score Ryan Olivo.
The Tigers added six runs in the third inning to make it a 10-1 game. Brad Flanders led off the inning with a double and scored on Johnson’s check swing base hit down the left field line. Zane Taylor greeted new pitcher Shane Hawk with an RBI single. Tingler, Kinsler and Ehlers all contributed RBI singles. Ryan Rallo beat the throw on a double play attempt to drive in the sixth run of the inning.
Urick belted a two-run homer in the home half of the third, his 10th homerun of the season that just snuck inside the foul pole down the left field line.
Mizzou added a single run in the fourth when Kinsler’s RBI single scored Jeremy Hernandez.
OSU struck back with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Scott Kirby led off the inning with a single and later scored on a wild pitch. Jose Virgil came through with an RBI single that scored Lyndsey Simmons to make it an 11-5 game.
Jason Jaramillo clubbed a one-out double off the wall in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch two batters later to cut the deficit to five.
Kinsler continued to hurt the Cowboys. A two-run triple in the left centerfield gap plated Taylor and Tingler. Kinsler scored on a single by Ehlers down the left field line to make the score 14-6.
Fields slammed a two-run homer onto the softball field and Urick followed with a shot over the scoreboard in right center, his second homerun of the game, to make it a five run game heading into the ninth inning.
The Cowboys made it interesting in the ninth. Gutierrez hit a two-out double into the rightfield corner to give the Pokes runners on second and third. Simmons drove both of them in with a bloop single to make it a 14-11 game. Missouri coach Tim Jamieson brought in Taylor Parker to face Virgil and got him to pop up to the shortstop to end the game. It was Parker’s first save of the season.
The Cowboys and Tigers will wrap up the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Southpaw Spencer Grogan is scheduled to take the mound for the Pokes, while the Tigers will send righty Derek Roper to the hill.
