May 03, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Baker allowed four runs, one earned, on eight hits with seven strikeouts and no walks to improve to 9-4 on the season. The Cowboys snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 29-17 overall and 11-8 in league play, while the Tigers fell to 30-16 and 12-9 in conference action.
"He was really good tonight, even late he threw the ball hard," said head coach Tom Holliday. "The last two innings, when he went up in the zone they were trying to catch and him and couldn't do it."
Scott Kirby started the Cowboy rally in the sixth with a two-out double and scored on a fielding error by second baseman Jeremy Hernandez on a ground ball by Kenny Hansley. Shortstop Chris Gutierrez then doubled down the left field line, advancing Hansley to third. Lyndsey Simmons then roped a two-run single to right that went over right fielder Kyle Johnsons head when he slipped, allowing Simmons to go to third.
The Pokes extended their lead to 7-4 in the seventh on a RBI triple by first baseman John Urick and a RBI single by catcher Jason Jaramillo.
Mizzou took advantage of two Cowboy errors in the second inning to score three unearned runs off of starter Scott Baker. Shortstop Ian Kinsler had the big hit in the inning, a RBI double down the right field line.
The Pokes scored a run in the bottom of the inning on a RBI double by Scott Kirby and scored another in the third on a RBI double by center fielder José Virgil.
Kinsler had a leadoff double in the fifth and scored on a single by Jayce Tingler to extend the Tiger lead to 4-2.
Kirby led the Cowboys with a 3-for-4 night while Simmons and Virgil chipped in with two hits each. Kinsler led Mizzou with a 3-for-3 showing with catcher Brad Flanders recording two hits in the losing effort.
MU starter Justin James lost his third straight start to drop to 6-6 on the year. The sophomore right hander from Yukon, Okla., allowed seven runs, four earned on 10 hits in six innings of work with five strikeouts and two walks.
The Cowboys and Tigers will be back in action Saturday night at 7 p.m. Right hander Joe Weaver is slated to take the mound for OSU while MU will counter with righty Garrett Broshuis.
