Oklahoma State Baseball Left Out Of NCAA Tourney Field
May 28, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
Obviously we were disappointed at not making the field. We feel the Big 12 deserved six teams in the tournament, but unfortunately that was not the case, said head coach Tom Holliday.
The Cowboys finished the season 34-24 overall and 14-13 in league play. The Big 12 had five teams selected to the 64-team field: Baylor, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas and Texas A&M. With the exception of Missouri, the four other schools were selected as No. 1 seeds in their respective regionals, but the conference did not receive a national seed.
The SEC had eight teams chosen to the field, including Florida, a club that did not make its eight-team conference tournament and finished with a 13-16-1 league mark.
The Cowboys lose two senior position starters in center fielder José Virgil and second baseman Kenny Hansley, while several players are expected to be drafted in the amateur baseball draft which takes place June 3-4.
Sophomore catcher Jason Jaramillo and sophomore third baseman Josh Fields will return next season to anchor the 2004 squad, which has the potential to have seven returning starters in the offensive lineup.
