OSU Advances to College World Series
April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
In a tight Super Regional pitching duel between the Bears' Josh Scott and the Cowboys' Frank Bludau, Baylor managed to go ahead 2-0 in the seventh after catcher Bryan Loeb sacrificed home first baseman Matt Williams.
Scott had given up two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 innings before he left the game, but the Cowboys (46-19) pulled ahead 3-2 in the eighth as Gasparino drilled a two-run double off Jason Jennings, who had come on in relief. Gasparino then put OSU ahead when he alertly tagged from third base on a pop-up caught in foul territory by BU third-baseman Preston Underdown. Oklahoma State sealed their 19th trip to Omaha with a three-run ninth. Gasparino had a two-RBI single and Jay McCullough produced a run-scoring single. Six of the nine Cowboy hits came in the final two innings.
Gasparino ended the day 2-for-4 with four RBI, all of which came when the Cowboys trailed by two, five outs from ending the seaason. McCullough and Lamont Matthews knocked in the other two Cowboy runs while Jimbo McAuliff went 3-for-4.
Jennings and Bears shortstop Jace Brewer went 2-for-4. Loeb recorded BU's only RBI. A Cowboy error allowed the Bears to score their first run in the fifth inning. The Bears managed six hits on the day. Bludau threw six innings, yielding those two runs on four hits. He struck out four and walked only two. Rusty Rushing (4-1) got the win with three innings on the mound. He shut the Bears out while giving up two hits and one base on balls.
Jennings took the loss after facing three batters and retiring none. He was credited with one OSU run while Mark Outlaw and Justin Taylor allowed on apiece as well.
Baylor ends its season at 50-15, setting a school record for wins.
