OSU vs. the CWS Field vs. Alabama Oklahoma State's only meeting with Alabama on the diamond occurred three years ago, when the Crimson Tide entered the College World Series as the top seed and OSU was the No. 8 seed. Alabama defeated the Cowboys, 7-5, with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on Chris Moller's second home run of the day. In that game, OSU third baseman Josh Holliday went 1-for-4 with a walk. Jay McCullough, on the team that season, did not play in the game.
vs. Cal State-Fullerton Oklahoma State is 3-2 all-time vs. the Titans, including a 1-1 mark in NCAA regional play and a 1-1 record in the College World Series. OSU's last meeting with CSUF was in the 1994 NCAA Midwest I Regional in Stillwater. The Titans won the game, 6-5, advancing to the CWS. OSU had won the earlier game in the day, 13-11. In Omaha, the Cowboys defeated Cal State-Fullerton, 14-4, in the first game of the 1990 World Series en route to a second-place finish. The only other meeting between the two teams in Omaha was in 1984, when CSUF defeated OSU, 10-2, to advance to the championship game.
vs. Florida State OSU has met the Florida State Seminoles just once on the diamond in school history, and that was at the 1986 College World Series. FSU won that game, 6-5, as Oklahoma State finished fourth at the CWS. Florida State went on to finish runnerup to Arizona that season.
vs. Miami OSU is 2-4 all-time vs. the Miami Hurricanes, including a 1-2 mark in the College World Series. The first College World Series meeting between these two schools was in 1981, when Oklahoma State defeated Miami, 12-6, in the second round of the tournament. The Cowboys went on to finish second to Arizona State in the Series. Miami and OSU met two more times in the CWS in back-to-back seasons in 1985 and 86. The Hurricanes won the 85 meeting, 2-1, en route to the national championship, and defeated the Cowboys, 6-2, in the first round of the 1986 World Series.
vs. Rice Oklahoma State is 20-11 all-time vs. the Rice Owls, although the two teams have never met in the postseason. The last meeting between the two teams was in the 1998 Big Ball Sports Classic in Houston, Texas, and ended in a 13-12 Rice win. In fact, Rice has won the last two meetings, both in the Holliday era.
vs. Stanford Oklahoma State is 4-1 all-time vs. Stanford, with all five games being played in the postseason. The Cowboys are 2-0 vs. the Cardinal in NCAA regional games, and 2-1 in the College World Series. The last meeting between these two schools was in the 1987 national championship finals, when Stanford defeated OSU, 9-5, to win the CWS. The Cowboys had defeated the Cardinal, 6-2, earlier in the tournament. The two teams met a year earlier in the Midwest Regional in Stillwater, with Oklahoma State sweeping Stanford, 16-8 and 3-0. The only other meeting was in the 1983 World Series, with OSU taking a 3-1 first-round win.
vs. Texas A&M The only team in the field that OSU has played this season, Texas A&M is the other Big 12 school in the College World Series this season. OSU is 13-11 all-time vs. the Aggies, although A&M won all four meetings this season. The last was a 4-2 win in the Big 12 Tournament three weeks ago. The two teams have never met in the College World Series, and the last postseason play between the two was in 1987, when OSU came back to win two games vs. the Aggies to advance to the CWS out of the Mideast regional in Starkville, Miss. The only other postseason game was in the 1984 Midwest regional in Stillwater, when OSU defeated A&M 5-0 en route to the CWS.

Cowboy Coach Tom Holliday: Oklahoma State head coach Tom Holliday is now in his third year as the pilot of the Cowboys program and has continued the Cowboy legacy with three NCAA appearances and 40 win seasons under his watch. Holliday moved past the legendary Henry P. Iba into fourth place on the Cowboys coaching list with OSU's 12-2 win over San Diego State on Feb. 20. Holliday's record of 132-59 (.691) is tops among the Cowboys' all-time coaches records in three seasons. He reached the 100-win plateau with the Pokes 5-4 win against Iowa State on March 20. Holliday previously served as an assistant at Oklahoma State from 1977-96. He is making his first College World Series appearance as head coach and the team's first since 1996.
On the Mound: Oklahoma State has a three-man rotation of lefthander Matt Smith, Thom Dreier and Jeremy Krismer.
Smith is considered the No. 1 starter but has a sore arm and could be pushed back in the rotation. He is 9-5 on the season with a 2.93 ERA, but has not won since defeating North Carolina State, 4-1, on April 21, a span of six starts. The Henderson, Nev. native has posted 134 strikeouts in 107.2 innings pitched and has limited opponents to a .225 batting average. The lefthander only lasted two innings in his last start against Baylor on June 4. Smith gave up seven runs, only one earned, on six hits while walking one. Dreier is 8-5 this season and has a 3.61 ERA, but has not won in his last three starts. Dreier had a string of three straight wins snapped against Texas A&M on May 20 at the Big 12 Tournament. He took the loss in his last outing against Baylor on June 5. He allowed four runs on three hits while walking five in five innings.
Krismer could be the Cowboys starter should they go to a third game. Krismer is a perfect 6-0 this season with a 5.30 ERA. The Tulsa native hurled an inning and a third of relief and gave up five runs on five hits (three home runs) in OSU's 17-7 loss to Baylor last Saturday.
Junior righty Frank Bludau (3-0, 5.73 ERA) and freshman righthander Ryan Herrmann (4-3, 4.34 ERA) could also see action as starters. The OSU closer's role belongs to junior righty Rusty Rushing. Rushing has picked up the win in his last three appearances including OSU's 6-2 win over Baylor last Sunday. On the season, Rushing is 4-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 37.0 innings pitched. He has notched four saves while also striking out 45 batters in 18 games finished this year.
The Cowboys in NCAA Play: OSU is in its 19th straight NCAA appearance and its 37th overall. This will be Oklahoma State's 19th College World Series, the last time in 1996, and has one national championship in 1959. OSU has posted a 65-24 ledger in regional play since 1978. From 1947 to 1953 various tournaments and playoffs took place around the country, but were not considered part of the NCAA Championship, similar to the current play-in system. OSU has made 30 NCAA Regional appearances and boasts a combined 227-130 (.636) in regional and CWS play.
Recapping Baylor: OSU took two of three from Baylor in Waco, Texas to advance to the CWS. The Cowboys wrapped 13 hits off of four Bear pitchers, including Big 12 Player of the Year Jason Jennings, to beat Baylor 18-11 in the series opener on June 4. Baylor responded with a 17-7 pounding of OSU on Saturday to even the series at 1-1, despite the outstanding performance of right fielder Lamont Matthews who hit his 29th and 30th homers of the year. Josh Scott held Oklahoma State to only three hits on Sunday through seven innings before the Pokes rallied for three runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to steal the victory away from the Bears. Billy Gasparino knocked in four of the Pokes six runs, including the two that tied the game in the eighth.
Recapping Wichita: After falling to UCLA, 12-6, to open the NCAA play, Oklahoma State roared back for four straight wins including two straight over host and No. 8 ranked Wichita State last Sunday. The Pokes bats came alive scoring in double digits in three straight games against Oral Roberts (12), UCLA (17) and Wichita State (11). OSU improved to 30-0 on the season in games in which they score 10 or more runs.
Leading the OSU charge was junior right fielder Lamont Matthews who went 13-for-20 during the five game stretch with five homers, three doubles and 13 RBIs. Matthews was named the regional's Most Outstanding Player and was later named the Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week. Other Cowboys named to the Wichita Regional All-Tournament team included second baseman Kevin Lucas, shortstop Billy Gasparino (named as a DH) and reliever Rusty Rushing. Rushing played an integral part in the Cowboys success on Sunday, picking up wins in both of the Wichita State contests in relief. The junior reliever is currently 3-1 with a 2.91 ERA and has notched 43 strikeouts in 34 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .180 batting average.
Smith and Budde Invited To USA Tryouts: Pitcher Matt Smith and freshman catcher Ryan Budde will represent Oklahoma State at the 1999 USA Baseball National Team tryouts this summer. On May 4 USA Baseball announced the first 33 player invitations to its summer camp scheduled to open June 8 at Hi Corbett Field in Tuscon, Ariz. Smith was invited to the tryouts as a freshman last season but did not make the squad. Budde is currently hitting .278 with 17 doubles this season with 37 RBIs.
Cowboy Briefs: The Cowboys have hit 130 homers in 65 games (2 per game) ... second baseman Kevin Lucas has struck out only 11 times in a team leading 260 at-bats ... OSU is 31-0 when scoring 10 runs or more ... Matt Smith has pitched three complete games this season but has lost two of them (Baylor, Oklahoma).
Eight Cowboys Make All-Big 12 Team Eight Oklahoma State baseball players were named to the All-Big 12 team as voted upon by the league coaches and released by the conference office. Shortstop Billy Gasparino, third baseman Josh Holliday, right fielder Lamont Matthews and starting pitcher Matt Smith were each selected to the first team, the most by any of the conference schools. Second baseman Kevin Lucas was a second team choice while first baseman Jay McCullough along with pitchers Thom Dreier, Jeremy Krismer and Rusty Rushing were honorable mention selections.
Holliday Receives More Awards...: Third baseman/catcher Josh Holliday added another award to the many plaudits he has received in his distinguished career at Oklahoma State when he was named the OSU Male Student-Athlete of the Year at the school's annual Student-Athlete Academic Awards Banquet held April 22. He was also named baseball's outstanding graduating senior. Holliday, a Collegiate Baseball Preseason All-American, will earn his degree in health promotions and was named to the third-team GTE Academic All-American baseball team two weeks ago. Holliday was the lone Oklahoma State representative on the squad which featured five other Big 12 players.
And Keeps Climbing Up The Career Charts: In addition to gaining numerous awards due to his performance on and off the baseball diamond, Holliday is climbing closer and closer to the top of the Cowboy career charts in several categories. The senior from Stillwater, Okla. is No. 2 in the Cowboys career record books in career at-bats (887) and No. 3 with 52 hit by pitches. He is also near the top in games played, homers, runs, doubles, total bases and bases on balls (see chart- pg 5). He broke Monty Farris record of 224 career walks with his 225th against Baylor on June 6.
Season Streaks: The Cowboys entered the 1999 season with two long-standing streaks to build on. With a win on May 16, Oklahoma State won 40 games for the 20th straight season to capture its first goal. Its second goal was to make the NCAA tournament for the 19th straight year and it accomplished that May 24. The tournament streak is the third-longest streak in the nation. Only Miami (Fla.) with 26 and Florida State with 21 NCAA treks in a row have longer skeins.
Gasparino and Matthews- All-Americans: The Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American baseball team was announced last Friday with two Oklahoma State Cowboys among the three teams. Senior shortstop Billy Gasparino was named to the second team and Lamont Matthews was on the third team on the team selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball.
Gasparino, is currently hitting .379 with 24 home runs this season, transferred to OSU from Georgia two years ago and has become a major force in the middle of the Cowboys' batting order. Matthews, a transfer from Kishwaukee Community College this season, leads the team with 27 homers and 99 RBIs and plays a solid defensive right field.
OSU In The CWS: In OSU's 18 CWS appearances before this season, the Cowboys have reached the championship game six times, most recently in the 1990 season against Georgia. The Pokes won its only national title 40 years ago with a 5-3 win over Arizona on June 18, 1959. In 1996, the Pokes lost two straight and were done for the first time in 10 CWS appearances. OSU is 38-34 (.513) in its previous 18 trips to Omaha and has recorded the one first place finish, five runner-up showings, four third places, two fourths, one fifth and two sevenths.
