Baseball Tops Georgia Tech at Midwest Regional
April 09, 2003 | Cowboy Baseball
"We felt like we had to come into this ballgame and score early." Head Coach Tom Holliday said. "We were fortunate to score early and then the second inning was characteristic of this ball club lately when we win."
With a run scored in the first, Oklahoma State scored five runs in the second inning off five hits. In the inning, OSU's Steve Hill had a two-RBI double, while Billy Gasparino and Kevin Lucas kept the inning alive with RBI singles
Georgia Tech would soon rally two runs in the bottom of the third, with back-to-back doubles from Matthew Boggs and Jay Hood.
Freshman pitcher Matt Smith was baffling batters by hurling 11 strikeouts, his second highest total of the season and walking no one. Smith pitched six and two-thirds innings and gave up four runs.
"Personal stats are great and they build your ego up, but I'm here to get the "W" for the team." Said Matt Smith. "Coach Holliday says that pitching sets the tone of the game, and I felt like the last two weeks I haven't set the tone at all. This week I told myself to redeem myself and set a tone."
Oklahoma State would score three runs in the seventh off three hits, highlighted by Marc Fournier who was 2-for-4 on the day with three RBI.
The Pokes would score four more runs in the eighth, with Fournier coming up big with a two-RBI triple.
