STILLWATER, Okla.- Junior shortstop Omar Quintanilla led Texas' 20-hit barrage with a 4-for-5, four RBI outing, as the Longhorns dropped Oklahoma State 15-5 in baseball action Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Stadium.
Texas evened the Big 12 series with the win and improved to 19-9 overall and 4-1 in the Big 12, while OSU fell to 13-8 and 1-1 in conference play.
The UT offensive attack knocked Cowboy starter Spencer Grogan out of the game in the fourth inning, extending a 3-2 lead with three runs in the stanza. Centerfielder Joe Ferin had a RBI single and shortstop Omar Quintanilla a two-run single to account for the scoring.
Texas added two runs in the sixth and put the game out of reach with four runs in the eighth to take a 12-3 lead. Leftfielder Eric Sultemeier blasted a two-run homer in the ninth, his third of the year, and rightfielder Dustin Majewski knocked a RBI single to finish the UT onslaught.
Solo homers by John Urick and Cory Von Tungeln closed out the scoring for the Cowboys in the bottom of the ninth.
Grogan (1-3) gave up four runs on six hits in three innings of work in the loss. J.P. Howell moved to 5-0 on the year with the win. He scattered eight hits over five innings and gave up two unearned runs while striking out eight.
First baseman John Urick led the Cowboys with three hits and two RBIs while J.D. Reininger and Taylor Teagarden aided the Longhorn cause with three hits each.
Texas scored a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead. OSU took advantage of a throwing error by UT catcher Taylor Teagarden to score two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage.
Texas stormed right back to take a 3-2 lead in the third courtesy of a two-run single by Majewski.
The Cowboys and Longhorns will close out the series tomorrow at 2 p.m. Junior right hander Joe Weaver is slated to take the mound for OSU while UT's starter is still to be determined.
