Lewis, Pendleton Earn First-Place Victories at Missouri Open

The Cowboys advanced four wrestlers to the finals, but only two prevailed. Lewis advanced after decisioning Matt Veach of Eastern Illinois, 6-3, while Johnny Thompson advanced after Shawn Bunch, Edinboro, defaulted.
Pendleton recorded his third fall of the tournament before advancing. The Lemoore, Claif., native racked up five takedowns before pinning Indiana's Brady Richardson in 5:56. Rusty Blackmon blanked Matt Weight of Illinois, 6-0, to advance.
In the finals, Tyrone Lewis recorded a pair of takedowns and a three-point nearfall to record the 8-2 victory over Tyron Woodley of Missouri. Chris Pendleton notched a first-place finish after decisioning Missouri's Ben Askren, 5-3. Pendleton had a 3-1 lead with 10 seconds left but Askren tied it with a reversal. Pendleton then scored a reversal of his own to take the match.
Johnny Thompson and Rusty Blackmon each notched second-place finishes. Thompson lost his second match of the year after Illinois' Mark Jayne won a 6-4 decision in sudden victory, while Blackmon dropped a 10-2 major decision to Arizona State's Ryan Bader.
After losing in the semifinals, Zack Esposito came back to earn a third-place finish, defeating Oklahoma's Jeff Ecklof, 5-3. Kevin Ward finished fourth after losing a 3-1 decision to Brian Stith of Arizona State.
Johny Hendricks and T.J. Sayers of Tennessee-Chattanooga wrestled 14:53 for fifth place. Hendricks and Sayers went round after round until Hendricks prevailed scoring a takedown with seven seconds remaining in the fourth set of overtimes.
Ronnie Delk finished fifth after pinning teammate Clark Shouse in 1:39, while Will Gruenwald finished third after winning a 10-6 decision over Oklahoma's Jake Hager.
Mike Christian placed fifth after edging out Illinois' Matt Weight, 4-3.
Nine Cowboys advanced into the Open division semifinals. Lewis recorded three consecutive pins, with the quickest coming in 36 seconds, to advance at 165 pounds, while Chris Pendleton notched a pair of falls to advance to the quarterfinals.
Derek Stevens defeated a pair of seeded opponents in Matt Pitts (4) and Austin DeVoe (5) to advance. The Norman, Okla., native recorded the lone takedown against Tennessee- Chattanooga's Pitts to secure the 3-2 victory, and escaped in the tiebreaker to record the 2-1 decision over Missouri's DeVoe.
Thompson won his first two matches to advance. The Oklahoma City, Okla., native hooked up the “snake” to pin Curtis Ray from Arizona State in 1:24, and battled his way to a 9-2 decision over Illinois' Cassio Pero.
At 141 pounds, Morrison High product Clark Shouse advanced to the quarterfinals after picking up an 11-2 major decision against Leo Martinez of Lindenwood, and decisioned Indiana's Cameron Sahon, 3-1. Ronnie Delk notched a trio of major decisions to advance.
The Cowboys' 149-pounder Zack Esposito used a lateral drop to pin Tony Catour of Northern Illinois in 1:03 to advance to the third round. The Three Bridges, N.J., native then recorded four takedowns en route to a 10-4 victory over Missouri Valley's Shane Cradelli.
At 157 pounds, Kevin Ward defeated Oklahoma's Rafael Maturino, 7-5, to advance to the quarterfinals. Ward garnered a 12-3 major decision over Clay French (Eastern Illinois) in the first round, and defeated Illinois' Mike Boyd, 7-3, in the second round.
In the semifinals, Delk and Esposito got pinned, while Shouse lost an 8-3 decision to J.P. Reese. In a rematch from Friday's dual, Kevin Ward couldn't hang on as he lost to Missouri's Kenny Burleson, 7-4. Stevens lost a close bout to OU's Mimi Miller, 2-1, in the tiebreaker.
In the freshman/sophomore division, five wrestlers advanced to the finals. Daniel Frishkorn, 133 pounds, pinned Ryan Klinger in 5:00, while 141-pounder Ryan Freeman scored his third consecutive shutout after defeating Kyle Swadley, 6-0.
B.J. Jackson, 141 pounds, scored his second straight major decision after defeating Kyle Waag, 12-1. Brent Parkey advanced after defeating Josh Maurby, 7-2, and Jack Jensen pinned Chris Wilkes in 5:55.
Frishkorn blitzed Pat Castillo of Northern Illinois, 8-1, to win first, while Jackson hung on for a 2-0 win over teammate Freeman to capture his title.
Parkey decisioned Jason Trulson, 4-1, of Arizona State to capture a first-place victory, while Jensen cruised to an 11-1 first-place victory over Tyler Bruesewitz of Northern Illinois. Kehrer finished third with an 8-2 decision over Matt Juncal of Cumberland.
Sam Lewnes and Tanner Munsell each finished sixth.
The Cowboys return to action on Dec. 7 when they take on Bedlam-rival OU in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
