ARLINGTON, Texas - Oklahoma scored six runs in the seventh inning breaking open a 4-3 ballgame en route to a 11-3 win over Oklahoma State in the first round of the Big 12 baseball tourney Wednesday evening at the Ballpark in Arlington.
"It was a beautiful day until the seventh inning," said head coach Tom Holliday.
OU trailed 3-2 in the sixth when catcher Spencer Wyman hit a two-run homer to left-center to give the Sooners a 4-3 lead. Oklahoma then put the game away in the seventh with six runs on three consecutive RBI singles, capped off by a three-run homer by centerfielder Reggie Willits.
All six of the runs in the inning were unearned off of reliever Shane Hawk due to a passed ball.
"It tears your heart out and you ask how does that happen after 55 games," added Holliday.
Oklahoma moves to 34-23 with the win while Oklahoma State fell to 37-20. The Sooners will play the winner of the Texas/Texas A&M contest at 8 p.m. Wednesday, while the Cowboys will play the loser of the game at 1 p.m.
Oklahoma scored a run in the bottom of the first on a double by leftfielder Jason Fransz. The Sooners then loaded the bases with no outs before Cowboy starter Scott Baker settled down and struck out the next two batters and got Wyman to fly to right to end the inning.
OSU scored two runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead. Jeff Salazar scored on a RBI single by Daylon Monette and Rob Watson scored on a passed ball in the stanza.
OU tied the game in the fifth on a RBI single by first baseman Charlie Frazier. Cowboy second baseman Nebasett Brown put OSU back ahead 3-2 in the top of the sixth with a solo homer off of Sooner starter David Purcey.
Cowboy starter Scott Baker took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and a walk. David Purcey moved to 5-4 with the win, giving up three runs, two earned in six innings of work.
OSU centerfielder Jeff Salazar extended his hitting streak to 23 games with a double in the fifth inning while Nebasett Brown led the Pokes at the plate with a 2-for-4 night with a homer and run scored.
"It was a regular game coming in and it was disappointing to lose it. The upside is we can come out tomorrow and try and get a win against Texas or A&M," said second baseman Nebasett Brown.
