Cowboys Outlast Ole Miss in Extra Innings

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Oklahoma State's baseball team used a game-winning hit from Paul Powell and clutch pitching from Daniel Rew and Joe Weaver to slip past Mississippi in the first round of the NCAA regional this afternoon.
Powell's RBI double in the tenth inning proved to be the game winner, scoring Jose Virgil and putting the Cowboys on top 5-4.
Weaver picked up the win for Oklahoma State (41-20), throwing two innings and allowing only one run while striking out three Rebel batters. Weaver also played first base for an out as Shane Hawk came into the game to face the left-handed hitter Burney Hutchinson before returning to the mound to record the final out of the inning.
Rew pitched the tenth inning in relief, picking up his second save of the year.
Mississippi (38-22-1) got on the board first with an unearned run in the first inning. Chad Sterbens reached base on a fielder's choice, advanced on a wild pitch and a passed ball before scoring on an error by third baseman Zach Cates.
Oklahoma State answered with three runs in the next frame. Jake Bollig led off with a solo home run to right field to tie the game 1-1. Paul Powell then tripled to left, and Luke Scott hit his 18th homer of the year, giving the Cowboys a 3-1 lead.
Ole Miss picked up two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at three runs apiece.
The Cowboys took the lead again in the top of the eighth as Jimbo McAuliff walked, stole second, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Powell.
In the Mississippi half of the ninth inning, Clint Faraar singled and scored on Josh Christian's RBI double to tie the game again 4-4.
Offensively, Oklahoma State was led by Scott and Powell. Scott was 2-for-3 in the game with a home run and 2 RBIs. Powell was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
The Cowboys will be back in action tomorrow in the second round of the NCAA regionals. Oklahoma State will face the winner of the Southern/Tulane game at 3:30 on Saturday.
