OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - - Oklahoma State's baseball team used three home runs and four doubles to overpower Baylor 18-4 in the first round of the Big 12 baseball tournament this evening at the Bricktown Ballpark. The 14-run differential marks the largest in the history of the tournament.
Eight of the nine starters for Oklahoma State got hits in the contest, and all nine got on base.
Oklahoma State (39-18) scored nine runs off of nine hits on Baylor ace Steven White. The Cowboys jumped out to a three-run lead as Paul Powell homered in the first inning, scoring Nebasett Brown and Jose Virgil.
Baylor (35-21) scored its only runs of the game in the next frame, putting four runs on the board off OSU starter Josh Merrigan. Merrigan then held the Bears scoreless through the next five innings, picking up the win for Oklahoma State and allowing only two earned runs and five hits. Joe Weaver, Daniel Rew and Jimmy Rhodes also threw an inning each, allowing only three hits and no runs between them.
Jimbo McAuliff's home run in the fourth inning scored two runs and put the Cowboys on top for good.
In the fifth inning, Jake Bollig led off with a walk and scored on a RBI double by Zach Cates. Rob Watson reached base on an error by Baylor third baseman Matt Williams and scored on Ali Modami's double. McAuliff also doubled, scoring two runs giving the Cowboys a five-run lead.
Oklahoma State used five consecutive two-out hits to score five runs in the seventh inning, extending the lead to 16-4. Luke Scott hit his 17th home run of the year in the inning, a three-run shot to left center field.
The Cowboys added a final two runs in the top of the eighth inning to bring the final score to 18-2.
Offensively, the Cowboys were led by Modami and Virgil. Modami went 2-for-3 with four runs scored and an RBI. Virgil was 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
With tonight's win, the Cowboys advance to the second round of the tournament. They will face the winner of the Nebraska-Iowa State game Thursday at 8 p.m.
