STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's baseball team scored eight unanswered runs on Sunday afternoon to down Baylor 15-5 in the series finale before 2,132 fans at Reynolds Stadium.
With the Cowboys holding an 11-5 lead, catcher Matt Oakes smashed a grand slam to left field to end the contest in the seventh inning due to the mercy rule.
OSU (34-15 overall and 13-11 in the Big 12) took advantage of four long balls on the day, including a three-run blast by Paul Powell in the first inning that gave the Pokes a 3-0 lead.
In the second frame, Nebasett Brown shot a two-run double down the left field line to up the Cowboy margin to five runs.
Baylor (33-17 and 16-8) picked up a pair of runs in the fourth off a pair of solo home runs by Chris Durbin and Ron Zboril to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Cowboys answered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning on a RBI single by Jimbo McAuliff and a RBI groundout by Brown.
The Bears cut into the lead in the fifth inning, scoring three runs on a pair of hits to chase Cowboy starter Mike Miller and make the score 7-5. However, BU would not score again as freshman Joe Weaver came on to hold the Bears in check over the final three frames and pick up the win. With the victory, the Stillwater, Okla., native moved to 6-0 on the season.
Baylor starter Kyle Edens suffered his first setback of the year and fell to 2-1 after working two innings.
OSU closed out the contest with a pair of four-run innings in the sixth and seventh to seal the win. In the sixth, McAuliff belted his first homer of the season, a three-run shot to left. The Oklahoma City native finished 2-for-4 with four RBI on the day. Luke Scott closed out the scoring in the inning with his 14th dinger of the season, a solo blast to right-center field.
A pair of singles and an intentional walk loaded the bases in the seventh before Oakes put the finishing touches on the game with his four-RBI round tripper. The Cowboy catcher finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored while driving in four.
The Cowboys will return to action on Tuesday when BYU comes to town for a 6 p.m. contest at Reynolds Stadium.
