STILLWATER, Okla - Oklahoma State's baseball team was unable to overcome a five-run third inning by Baylor on Saturday night as the Bears claimed a 7-5 victory over the Cowboys before 2,063 fans at Reynolds Stadium.
Baylor (33-16 overall and 16-7 in the Big 12) got started early, plating a pair of runs in the first inning. BU took advantage of back-to-back walks to start the game and a RBI single by catcher Kelly Shoppach to score the first run. First baseman Ron Zboril drove home the second run of the inning with a groundout.
The Cowboys answered in the bottom half of the frame with a pair of runs to tie the score at two apiece. Designated hitter Brad Bouris' RBI groundout chased home center fielder Jimbo McAuliff before right fielder Luke Scott came home with the Pokes' second run on a bloop single by shortstop Paul Powell.
OSU jumped out in front in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of a Baylor miscue to go up 4-2. First baseman Ali Modami and McAuliff came home when BU shortstop Mark Saccomanno let a a ground ball from Bouris go between his legs.
The Bears came back in a big way in the top of the third with a five-spot off of Cowboy starter Justin Meccage. The big blow in the inning came courtesy of center fielder Chris Durbin's three-run homer. Designated hitter Paul Richmond added a solo blast in the inning for BU.
Reliever Nick McCurdy came on to stifle the Bears' attack. The junior threw 5.1 scoreless innings and struck out a career-high nine batters to hold Baylor in check.
Meccage gave up seven runs in 2.2 innings of work to take the loss of the Cowboys and fall to 3-1 on season. Justin Taylor tossed seven innings to improve to 6-2 while Paul Thorp picked up his second save of the series and his fourth overall.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow with a 2:00 p.m. start at Reynolds Stadium.
