THIS WEEK
Oklahoma State will host the Gonzaga Bulldogs for a two-game mid-week
series. First pitch for Tuesday's game is set for 6 p.m. at Allie P.
Reynolds Stadium. Wednesday's game is slated for 1:50 p.m. at the
Southwestern Bell Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Okla. Originally
scheduled for a 2 p.m. start, the game has been moved up to 1:50 to
accommodate Gonzaga's travel plans.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
The Bulldogs bring an even 17-17 record into Stillwater for this week's
contest. They are on a three game winning streak, having swept the Portland
Pilots in a three-game series this weekend.
Gonzaga is led by first baseman Kevin Richardson. The junior from
Bellingham, Wash. leads the team with a .357 batting average and is second
on the team with seven home runs. Lefthanded pitcher Barry Matthews is
leading the team with a 2.70 ERA and eight home runs, and is second on the
team in batting average, hitting at a .336 clip.
In their last meeting, OSU defeated Gonzaga 10-5 in Las Vegas, Nev. on
March 11, 1988. Oklahoma State leads the overall series 1-0.
PROBABLES ON THE MOUND
OSU will send junior Justin Meccage to the mound for Tuesday's series
opener. Meccage owns a 1-0 record on the season with a 2.70 ERA and leads
the team with a .063 opponent batting average.
Senior Darren Heal will get the nod for the Cowboys in Wednesday's game.
The Staten Island, N.Y. native is 1-1 with a 7.13 ERA. In 17.2 innings, he
has struck out 12 batters.
LOOKING BACK
Oklahoma State swept Cleveland State in a two-game series last weekend.
Behind a record setting offensive performance, the Cowboys defeated the
Vikings 12-4 in the first game. Oklahoma State hitters pounded out ten
doubles, tying a school record for most doubles hit in a single game. Nick
McCurdy picked up his fifth win of the season striking out five batters in
six innings and giving up no earned runs.
In the second game, the Cowboys scored seven runs with two outs in the
sixth inning and defeated Cleveland State 11-4. Mike Miller picked up his
first win of the season for Oklahoma State, pitching five innings of one-hit
baseball. Paul Powell and Nebasett Brown led the Cowboys offensively, both
going 2-for-4 and combining to score five runs.
Roy York led the Cowboys to a 18-9 victory over Texas Pan-American on
Wednesday, hitting three home runs in a game for the second time this
season. Relief pitcher Kris Oakes earned his first win of the year in the
contest, pitching two innings and striking out three Bronc batters.
