AMES, Iowa - Oklahoma State's baseball team dropped the series opener against Iowa State on Friday, falling 9-4 before 258 fans at Cap Timm Field.
For the Cowboys, who fell to 22-8 overall and 7-6 in the Big 12, it was a case of missed opportunities as OSU stranded 13 runners and was unable to take advantage of 12 walks issued by ISU pitchers.
The Cyclones, 8-12-1 and 3-3, got a run in the first before the Cowboys countered with two of their own in the top of the second to take its only lead of the game.
In the frame, centerfielder Toby Rhodes roped a double down the leftfield line to drive home third baseman Zach Cates. First baseman Ali Modami provided the Pokes other run in the inning with a sacrifice fly to centerfield that plated Brad Bouris.
Iowa State took control of the game with four runs in the bottom of the inning and chased OSU starter Josh Merrigan after 1.2 innings. The southpaw took the loss for the Cowboys and saw his record even at 4-4 on the year.
In the sixth inning, OSU closed the gap to 5-3 when Modami singled home Jimbo McAuliff. However, the Cyclones responded once again in the bottom half of the frame with three runs of their own.
Righthander Charly Bigwood worked 5.2 innings and overcame eight walks to pick up his first win of the season, rising to 1-3 on the year.
The two teams will square off again tomorrow at 1 p.m.
