This Weekend:
A week after heading west, the Cowboys will head the opposite direction
this weekend, traveling to Florida for a four-game series. On Friday and
Saturday afternoon, the Pokes will take on the Boston College Eagles.
Saturday night, OSU will conclude the Saturday twin bill against Florida
Atlantic. The Cowboys will wrap up the weekend with a showdown against the
Miami Hurricanes in Coral Gables on Sunday.
About the Opposition:
Friday's contest against Boston College will be the season opener for the
Eagles. Under the direction of head coach Peter Hughes, B.C. posted a 35-20
mark a year ago. The Eagles will open with southpaw Chris Gannon on Friday,
while righthander Matt Lederhos is slated to pitch on Saturday.
Florida Atlantic already has a pair of three-game series under its belt. The Owls opened the season with Miami dropping two of three against the Canes. This past weekend, FAU bounced back, taking two of three from Bethune-Cookman to even their season ledger at 3-3.
The Miami Hurricanes enter the weekend ranked in the Top 10 nationally in all three polls. On the season, the Canes are 3-1 entering Wednesday night's contest with Florida International. Last Saturday, Miami defeated in-state rival Florida 14-5.
Sunday's contest between the Cowboys and Canes will be carried by Fox Sports Florida and will be available via satellite as well. Coordinates for the game are as follows: GE5, transponder 14 on the KU satellite system.
On the Mound:
Freshman Scott Baker will make his second career start on Saturday
afternoon against Boston College. The Shreveport, La., native was impressive
in his Cowboy debut against UC Riverside, striking out six and holding the
Highlanders scoreless in five innings. Baker, considered one of the top
newcomers in the country according to Baseball America, was a 36th round
pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2000 amateur baseball draft.
Getting the nod against Florida Atlantic will be junior college transfer Nick McCurdy. McCurdy, a two-time draft choice of the Colorado Rockies, will be making his first ever start for the Pokes after transferring from Jefferson Davis Junior College.
On the hill for the Cowboys on Sunday will be preseason All-Big 12 pick Josh Merrigan. Merrigan, a senior southpaw from Vermillion, S.D., picked up his first win of the year in the Cowboys' opener against The Citadel.
