TEMPE, Ariz. -- Oklahoma State's second-ranked wrestling team jumped out early and never looked back, winning 31-7 at the Wells Fargo Arena over Lee Roy Smith's 11th-ranked Arizona State Sun Devils.
John Smith's Cowboys improve to 16-1 headed into Sunday's Bedlam showdown with the sixth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. The 11th-ranked Sun Devils drop to 10-5, closing out their dual season.
"It was a good night for us," said Smith. "I thought we wrestled well, we were a little soft in the first period, but overall, I was very happy with the team. It was good to see Shane Roller finally get a close win like that. When you battle through tough situations like Shane and Johnny (Thompson) did tonight that's when you get better."
The highlight match of the evening came at 133 pounds where second-ranked Johnny Thompson faced ASU's 11th-ranked David Douglas. The two have met twice already this season, both tightly-contested bouts that went the way of Thompson.
Douglas reversed Thompson to open the third period, after a 30 second ride Thompson escaped to take a 4-2 lead that proved to be the final.
At 141 pounds, ASU's third-ranked Eric Larkin held on for a 3-2 win over eighth-ranked Charles Walker. The three team points were the first of the night for Arizona State.
Top-ranked Reggie Wright won a hard-fought 4-2 decision over Dana Holland at 149 pounds. Wright's win improved his record to 25-0 on the season. At 157 pounds, 16th-ranked Shane Roller avenged two earlier losses, decisioning 11th-ranked Rocky Smart, 5-4.
Tyrone Lewis opened the dual by pinning ASU's 14th-ranked 174-pounder, Curtis Owen, in ?. Third-ranked Daniel Cormier followed that with a 12-4 major decision of No. 12th-ranked R.D. Purcell at 184 pounds.
OSU opened a 15-0 lead after the 197-pound match when Mark Mu?oz picked up a 20-5 technical fall at the 5:27 mark against Mike Marshall.
The Pokes picked up a mild upset at heavyweight, as 14th-ranked James Huml decisioned 12th-ranked Kellan Fluckiger, 6-4.
The Cowboys extended the lead to 22-0 at 125 pounds when ninth-ranked Matt Brown major decisioned Chris Knox, 14-4.
The Cowboys dropped the final match of the night as Chris Pendleton lost a 11-0 major decision to ASU's fourth-ranked Steve Blackford at 165 pounds.
OSU returns to Stillwater for a Sunday Bedlam battle at 2 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
