Sloan Qualifies For NCAAs In 5,000-Meters

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Oklahoma State track senior Chuck Sloan provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships with his performance in the 5,000-meter race at the Stanford Invitational here late Saturday night.
Sloan finished the race in 14th, but his time of 13:55.74 was good enough to meet the 14:07.00 provisional qualifying time for nationals in June. He was the 10th collegiate runner to cross the line. Unattached runner Bernard Lagat won the race in 13:35.10. Bolota Asmerom of California-Berkeley was the first collegiate runner to place as he finished second with a time of 13:42.79.
Derek Tate represented OSU in the 10,000m at the meet. He finished the race in 54th with a time of 30:35.36. He was not too far off the time of 29:55.00 needed to provisionally qualify. Unattached runner Rodney DeHaven won the event in 28:17.25, while Stanford's Brent Hauser finished second and was the first collegiate finish with a time of 28:23.37.
The track team will next travel to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Southwest Invitational on April 1.
