NORMAN, Okla. - Reggie Wright, a newcomer to Bedlam wrestling, got introduced to the hoopla and produced a fall over freshman Jared Frayer to propel Oklahoma State's top-ranked wrestling team to a 24-16 win over fifth-ranked Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at the OU Fieldhouse.
Wright stuck Frayer 4:39 into the match. It is the second straight match that the Cowboys have needed a fall from a newcomer to preserve the win and their dual winning streak, which now stands at 48. Dave Anderton had a fall to bring the Pokes from behind against Minnesota.
Mark Muoz opened with dual with an impressive 9-3 win over Tom Grossman in the 184-pound match. Muoz was in control of the match from start to finish. The Sooners' Waymon May came right back with a dominating performance of his own and pounded Pat Popolizio 9-3 to even the dual at 3-3.
John Henry Ward, whose father was a standout football player and wrestler at OSU, turned a trick on the Cowboys as the Sooners' heavyweight pinned Anderton as time expired in the first period.
Oklahoma State's defending national champions Teague Moore and Eric Guerrero both picked up wins to give the Cowboys the lead. Moore won a 7-5 overtime decision over longtime rival Shane Valdez. He is 8-2 all-time versus Valdez.
Guerrero had an easy 16-1 technical fall over freshman Mat Ridings. He has won all three of his matches this season by technical fall. His win gave the Cowboys a 11-9 team lead in the dual.
Second-ranked Michael Lightner had a come-from-behind win over Jamill Kelly at 141-pounds. Lightner scored a reverse and a near-fall in the final 17 seconds of the match to win 5-3 and give the Sooners a 12-11 dual lead.
After Wright's heroics Cowboy senior Jimmy Arias won a methodical 10-2 major decision over Nathan Shafer in the 157-pound match. At 165-pounds, OU All-American Rod Jones scored a major decision 16-4 win over Shawn Smith. Top-ranked Mark Smith closed out the dual with an 11-5 win over Keith Wilson.
The Cowboys will take the next week off for finals and return to action Dec. 18 with a pair of duals. The first against Cal Poly and the other against Fresno State.
