Track and Field Competes at Cyclone Invitational

AMES, Iowa - Junior Chuck Sloan improved his time in the 3,000m by more than 12 seconds at the Cyclone Classic here today to earn a provisional spot in the NCAA Championships.
Sloan's 8:02.17 was good enough for 11th place in the event. Arkansas' Michael Power won the 3,000m with a 7:50.05 performance, nine seconds better than an automatic NCAA bid.
Brian Young and Andrew Hennessy moved closer to qualifying for the NCAAs by improving their times in the mile run. Young set a new Cowboy season best with a 12th-place, 4:07.72 performance Hennessy was close behind, finishing 14th in 4:08.65.
Cam Katchuck also set a new Cowboy season best in the 400m. He finished 22nd in the event in 49.24.
The first place runner in all of the distance events qualified for the NCAA Championships. Along with Power in the 3,000m, SMU's Roman Oravec's 1:45.97 in the 800m, Stanford's Michael Stember's 3:58.57 in the mile and William and Mary's Matt Lane's 13:52.33 in the 5,000m all met the automatic qualifying mark.
In Friday's action, the Cowboys had three runners place in the top 20 of the 49-athlete field of the 5,000m. Gitogo Churu paced the Cowboys with a 10th place finish in 14:24.24.
Next up for the Cowboys is the Big 12 Championships on Feb. 19-20 hosted by Kansas State in Manhattan, Kan.
