Men's Distance Relay Places First, Qualifies for NCAAs

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Oklahoma State's men's track team had the confidence it could go and qualify for nationals on the first try in the distance medley relay and it did here today.
The OSU distance medley relay team finished first in 9:47.53 at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Ahearn Fieldhouse. It was the first time this season the team of Chuck Sloan, Brian Young, Andrew Hennessy and Cam Katchuck completed the race. The Cowboys set a Big 12 record in the event.
"The distance medley relay team ran really well today," OSU coach Dick Weis said. "We were able to provisionally qualify for nationals."
At the end of the first day of events, the Cowboys sat in third place overall, nine points behind No. 1 Colorado and two points behind No. 2 Nebraska. Last year, OSU finished 12th at the Big 12 Championships
Beside winning the distance relay event, the Cowboys also scored in the 5,000m final. Ren Carlsen finished third in 14:31.18, while Nathaniel Lane finished sixth (14:39.05), Gitogo Churu finished eighth (14:45.21) and Bruce Wright finished 14th (15:01.60).
Staffan Stegmark and Hennessy advanced to the Saturday's finals of the mile. Stegmark completed the race in 4:14.21 in his heat while Hennessy finished his heat in 4:20.16.
Young showed he's up to defending his Big 12 championships in the 1,000m with a first-place finish in 2:28.41 in his heat.
"I thought we ran very well today," Weis said. "Everyone who should have qualified for the finals did. We have guys in the finals in the 1,000m and we also had two guys qualify for the finals in the mile. We also scored nine points in the mile. Ren (Carlsen), who been hurt pretty much all year, came through for us in the 5,000m."
The Cowboys' day starts at 11 a.m. Saturday with the shot put and ends with the 4x400m relay at 7:15 p.m.
