OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla.--Texas A&M stayed alive in the Big 12 Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday, downing Oklahoma State 4-2 in the first elimination game.
Casey Fossum struck out 10 and allowed eight hits in a complete-game pitching performance for the top-seeded Aggies (45-13), who had been upset by Oklahoma in Wednesday's tournament opener. A&M, ranked No. 1 in one major poll and the Big 12 regular-season champion, advances to play the loser of Thursday's Oklahoma-Nebraska winner's bracket game today in another elimination contest.
Oklahoma State (40-17) lost for the second straight day to finish 0-2 in a conference tournament for the first time in 20 years.
The Cowboys, shut out by Nebraska in Wednesday's first round, managed just nine hits in two days, after entering post-season play as the nation's third-best scoring team, averaging 11 runs a contest.
"We wanted to jump on them early and we did by scoring two runs early,'' said Fossum. "They would have scored more, but I was able to hold them.
"I had a plan that I was pitching to. I knew that my job was to pitch a complete game so that we could save some people that will be ready tomorrow. I'm a little tired, but it was worth it."
A&M's Steve Scarborough led off the game with a home run to center field. The Aggies added single runs in the second and sixth innings to make it 3-0, before Oklahoma State managed its one big blow against Fossum, Jay McCullough's two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth.
Dell Lindsay's bloop RBI single in the seventh boosted the lead to 4-2 and Fossum did the rest, striking out three Cowboys in the final two innings to close out the win.
