Cowboy Distance Runners Shine in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Cowboy track and field team traveled to the University of Tennessee for the 32nd annual Sea Ray Relays over the weekend.
Five distance runners shined in their individual events with one coming home a provisional national qualifier.
Junior Brian Young was victorious in his heat of the 1,500m run. Young and sophomore Ben Phillips recorded season bests of 3:49.77 and 3:55.25 respectively in the event.
Juniors Rene Carlsen and Nathaniel Lane finished one-two in the 5,000m run finishing in times of 14:23.53 and 14:29.46 respectively.
"I felt good in today's race," said Carlsen. "This should be a sign of how my performance will be in the next few weeks."
Sophomore Chuck Sloan provisionally qualified for the national meet in Buffalo, N.Y. on June 3 in his specialty event of the 3,000m steeplechase. He placed second in the event, finishing in a time of 8:46.54.
Sloan placed 10th at the 1997 national meet in Bloomington, Ind. as a freshman, covering the steeplechase event in a time of 9:02.13.
