Baseball Sets Tone Early in 8-5 Win

STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings and used solid pitching performances from Thom Dreier and Dale Pearson to defeat Texas, 8-5, Saturday night at Reynolds Stadium.
With the win OSU captured the season series and improved to 36-13 overall and 15-8 in Big 12 play. UT dropped its fourth straight contest and fell to 34-21 on the season and 17-12 in conference action.
The Cowboys jumped on the board with a run in the first inning when Kevin Lucas scored from third off a groundout by Billy Gasparino. The Cowboys added a run in the second off a Ryan Budde triple and two more in the third off a Lamont Matthews single to extend their lead to 4-0.
Texas second baseman Tommy Nicholson scored off a Jason Moore groundout in the fourth to cut the OSU lead to 4-1. Josh Holliday responded with a RBI single in the fifth to push the lead back to four but UT came back with a run in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-2.
The Cowboys responded with two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to help put the game away.
Pitcher Thom Dreier picked up his second consecutive win to move to 7-3 on the season. Dreier gave up four runs on four hits and struck out three in six innings of work. Senior Dale Pearson pitched three innings of quality relief to pick up the first save of his collegiate career. Pearson gave up one run, off a ninth inning homer by catcher Sam Anderson, on four hits and struck out three in his first appearance since Apr. 23 against BYU.
The teams will be back in action in the series finale tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. Right hander Jeremy Krismer will be on the mound for the Pokes while lefty D.J. Jones is scheduled to hurl for the Longhorns.
Tomorrow is Senior Appreciation Day as seven OSU seniors will be recognized in a special pregame ceremony at 12:45.
