WICHITA, Kan. - Freshman lefthander Matt Smith scattered eight hits and four runs while striking out 11 and Oklahoma State took advantage of five Georgia Tech errors as the fifth-seeded Cowboys defeated the second-seeded Yellow Jackets, 13-4, in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional at Eck Stadium in Wichita Kansas.
Tech (38-21) falls into the losers bracket and will play Friday morning at 11 a.m. CDT against the loser of tonight's game between top-seeded Wichita State and sixth-seed Southeast Missouri State.
Tech starter Chuck Crowder (11-4) lasted just 1-1/3 innings after allowing four runs on three hits and two walks as the Cowboys (39-19) jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings.
The Jackets managed to close the gap to 6-3 after Heath Honeycutt's 13th home run of the season, a solo blast to lead off the sixth inning, but OSU added three runs in the seventh and four more in the eighth.
"We walked too many, we made way too many errors, and we didn't hit the ball when we needed to," said Tech head coach Danny Hall. "Chuck Crowder has been outstanding for us all year, but he just didn't have it today. He couldn't throw his fastball for a strike. When he walked two left-handed hitters in the second inning, I knew that was it, because he usually dominates lefthanders."
After picking up on unearned run in the first, the Cowboys loaded the bases in the scond on a pair of walks and a single. Steve Hill drove in two runs with a double, Billy Gasparinos legged out a bunt for a hit and an RBI, and then Kevin Lucas and Josh Holliday followed with RBI-doubles to stake OSU to 6-0 lead.
Jase Wrigley relieved Crowder and managed to shut down the Cowboys until the seventh, when they managed three runs on a squeeze bunt, an RBI-single by Fournier and a hit batsman. Fournier added a two-run triple in the Cowboys four-run eighth inning.
