Cowboys Struggle In Opening Round At Palmetto Dunes
November 05, 1999 | Cowboy Golf
Nov. 5, 1999
HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Anders Hultman and Edward Loar carded opening-round 70s Friday, but Oklahoma State is in 10th place among 18 teams after one round of the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational.
Hultman and Loar are tied for 20th place individually, and although OSU is in 10th place, it is only four strokes out of fifth and seven out of second in a tightly bunched field. The Cowboys are 13 strokes behind first-round leader Texas, which carded a 16-under-par score of 272 Friday. North Carolina's Rob Simmons recorded a 65 and is the individual leader.
J.C. DeLeon is third among OSU players after an even-par 72 Friday, he is in 39th place. Landry Mahan is 51st at 73, and Charles Howell is 62nd at 74. OSU is trying to maintain some recent momentum: Howell set a school record with seven consecutive rounds in the 60s until it was snapped Friday, he won the team's most recent event, the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, and was named the College Golf Foundation's Golfer of the Month for October. As a team, the Cowboys won the Taylor Made Red River Classic, earning them the No. 1 national spot in the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings.
The Palmetto Dunes event continues with the second round Saturday and the final round Sunday.
