STILLWATER, Okla. -- Oklahoma State baseball announced the signing of three players ranked among the top prospects in the country according to head coach Tom Holliday.
The Cowboys signed pitchers David Beigh (pronounced Beek) and Jimmy Rhodes as well as infielder Scott Threinen to letter-of-intents to play for the Pokes in 2001.
"We are excited to have all three players come to Oklahoma State," said coach Holliday. They are all outstanding prospects with definite pro potential who have decided college is their choice for now.
Beigh, a 6-5, 230-pound senior at Harrison High in Battleground, Ind., is a right handed pitcher who chose Oklahoma State over Alabama, Kentucky and Texas A&M. In addition to playing baseball, Beigh is a preseason all-state selection in basketball.
Assistant coach John Farrell believes Beigh can contribute immediately as a freshman. "David is someone who will step in as a freshman and has the chance to be dominant in the near future," said Farrell.
Rhodes, a 6-3, 210-pound senior at Jefferson High in Sheperdstown, W. Va., is another right handed pitcher who was recruited by Clemson, LSU, West Virginia and North Carolina.
Like Beigh, Rhodes is a pitcher the coaching staff will depend upon to contribute immediately. "Jimmy is a power pitcher that throws strikes and has played at a very high level against quality competition," said Farrell. He should challenge for a significant role on the pitching staff in 2001.
Threinen, a 6-1, 190-pound senior at Kasson High in Mantorville, Minn., is a shortstop/third baseman who chose the Cowboys over Long Beach State and Minnesota.
"Scott is a strong player with good aggressive instincts," added Farrell. "He is a gamer whose style of play identifies with the OSU program.
